Is someone really bitching about Mike's cage? Because they knocked that project out of the park.

I'll never be able to look at the stadium without seeing that pipe again. I can't believe I didn't notice it before.

You really won't. It's the first thing I notice now since someone pointed it out to me.

You guys realize, of course, he's talking about the OLDER structure? I had never considered the possibility of incorporating it into the new structure in some way...but it would have been nice to preserve it if possible.

I was wondering if that was the case. Still the new cage is pretty much perfect. You have to be a miserable person to bitch about Mike's cage.

Who cares...it's better now. Little things like that help in recruiting too. When you have a campus that's aesthetically pleasing...it can't hurt in recruiting. Walk in...see amazing facilities...walk out...more amazing facilities.

Who wants to walk around a campus that looks like shite no matter how much tradition it carries?

I love it, but I could see why someone with an eye for the historic parts of campus would like to have seen that be worked into the final plan.

My only real quibble with Mike's cage is the ridiculous Disney World fake flag they have at the top of it.

Put a real flag there and switch it out a few times a year. I'm thinking we can swing the cost of replacing a damn flag...

Mike's old cage.

I took a shite 20 years ago. One day it might be historic too but it would still be shite.

I think his point was that they are not mutually exclusive. No one is suggesting, in this case, that Mike did not deserve a new, far superior home. Just that it might have been a nice touch to have incorporated a historic part of the old structure into the new updated cage.

It's sort of the same debate that's going on with the upper decks. It's easy to point to both newer decks and complain that neither took into account the historic look of the stadium underneath...and it would be true. Both look like they were dropped there with no concern for how they matched the original structure. But you know what? the older West Upper deck looked like arse, too and never fit the original structure. You know what else? The SEZ never incorporated the arch structure from the NEZ. Our stadium is been a hodge-podge of different looks for a LONG arse time!

As much as I wish we could somehow turn back the clock and go back and talk some sense into all those designer that made changes to the stadium over the decades to make sure that beginning with the SEZ they made everything match the old bowl, it's far too late. It's why I'm not a huge fan of the new design, because it's rather pointless to try and match part of the stadium that NO ONE has given a crap about matching since the stadium was still a horseshoe. From the outside, it just looks like a bunch of different people all made changes at different times with no thought of the next change.

I sort of just accept that and try and consider it part of the charm of the stadium...that anyone can take a look at the stadium and tell which parts were built one at a time. If, however, the desire was to create a cohesive design that brought together the outside of the stadium to make it appear as if the stadium was built to that size in one shot, then it's an epic fail.
