I know we were in trouble when Lou Tepper said it would take 4 years to put the defense in. The players are only there for 4 years.

If LSU had defense that was even 8th or 9th, not dead last in the SEC that year they win the West and maybe the SEC

Yep we boat raced the division champ Miss State that year

But yeah frustrating year. Lost to UGA by 1, UK by a field goal, Ole Miss in OT, Alabama an an onside kick, Notre Dame in a shootout, etc. and those close losses carried into 99 as well

The losses to UK and Ole Miss did them in. The focus was gone and it was over. BUT that loss to UGA started the downfall ..

What was the reason behind his departure for UT and Mack Brown? A rift with DiNardo? Joe Dean being a cheapskate beta?

Drop linebackers, ford truck commercials, master P, and Dinardeaux’s restaurant is what went wrong.

I think Dinardo lost the team from the UGA game forward because of Lou Tepper.

DiNardo was an excellent coach who built LSU back up, but his ego was too big and he could not admit when he was wrong.

Made some VERY bad assistant hires and refused to correct them.

He left Saban a very solid roster.

Good info, but I made one correction. IIRC, his last year he hired a first time OC who had such a simple offense that the opposing defenses were correctly calling out the plays just based on personnel and formation.
In addition, there was no depth on the team in DiNardo's last few years. He had good signing classes, but many of them didn't make it to campus or dropped out. In addition, he worked the players to hard during the week so that injuries and fatigue began to add up to an already depleted roster as the season wore on. One good thing about DiNardo----he successfully recruited Kevin Faulk to LSU.

a lotta ppl don't remember this, but Tepper actually took over the defense for the 97 Indy Bowl. he installed some of his stuff and we beat an ND team that had beaten us pretty good in the regular season. seeing his 3-4 in action was some of why we were so highly regarded going into 98.

that was the Mealey snow game.

definitely his most important recruit, but he left a lot of talent for Saban to work with. bunch of guys that went to the NFL, even if only briefly. Ro, Booty, Nall, Josh Reed, Dom Davis, Toe, Jarvis Green, Howard Green, Bradie, Ryan Clark just off the top of my head.

The loss to Georgia set the tone for a team that could not seal the deal.

Quincy Carter

can't leave him out, dude played the game of his life that night. Booger was draped on him for sacks on about 3 big 3rd down plays and he managed to make throws for 1st downs.

Kentucky was an awful game. The faked a field goal when everyone knew they were faking it and still got a first down and hit a chip shot. After the Georgia game it seemed like the wheels fell off. Had a close one with notes same but they were missing something. It was a coach with a nature of winning. Dinardo didn’t have it. Shows with his first 3 years of winning games Florida and losing to ole miss the next week.

Dinardo would run the players into the ground. Legs werent strong come 4th quarter. When the interim coach took over for the bowl game against ND, he rested their legs. Players stated at the time that it was the difference in the game. Gotta have those legs fresh come gametime.

I was an officer with the GridIron club during that time. Jerry spoke every Friday at lunch. He really overreacted to the bashing and became unhinged during that season. It was him against the world and he lost badly.

UGA loss was crushing, that was a winnable game against a young qb.

Tepper made Quincy Carter a lot of money that night. Carter stated “we just took what they were giving us“. When asked what LSU was giving, his reply was “everything!“

We had a linebacker covering Champ Bailey. Later in the game Bailey made an incredible catch.

We had a very talented and good offense that year but the defense was just God awful.

We could’ve won the Florida game and had the opportunity for a pick six right before the half but the ball was dropped. The Alabama game was the most disheartening a ball because the game was well in hand and Bama somehow snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in part due to Abram booty missing a shirt touchdown pass by having it stripped from him and to ball for touchdowns We could’ve won the Florida game and have the opportunity for a pick six right before the half but the ball was dropped. Dinardo was the coach for the bowl game. Are you talking about the 1999 game against Arkansas?
