That UGA game gutted the team... also the defense was putrid and got worse as the year went on.

Dinardo started going insane as the losses mounted.

DiNardo was an excellent coach who built LSU back up, but his ego was too big and he could not admit when he was wrong.

Made some bad assistant hires and refused to correct them.

He left Saban a very solid roster.

I remember Carl Reese went on the speaking engagement tour after they beat Florida in 1997. That was a big mistake.
Spurrier made sure to remind LSU the next couple of years.

Tepper sold a million books on Complete Linebacking yet refused to change the defense when all the SEC coaches attacked the drop LB.

Offense was good, one of the highest scoring up until that year in LSU history IIRC. Defense couldn’t stop anything. Tepper using at LB to cover Champ Bailey was idiotic. Defensive scheme took “3 years to fully implement”. GTFO. Wasted Faulk and Tyler’s senior years.

Combination of things but I think it was just the consecutive close losses to very good teams that the players couldn't recover from psychologically.

The Georgia loss was crushing. I think it was 21-21 at half and the only TD in the 2nd half was a pass that looked like it was going right to Ryan Clark (in front of student section). He froze and the UGA WR stepped right in front to catch the TD.

We also played a good 1st half at the Swamp, back when it was very difficult to win there. I was at that game and felt very good about winning, until they returned the opening kickoff down to our 5 yd line or so.

Absolutely this...’98 doesn’t happen and I doubt he gets fired for just one abysmal season in ‘99 and the whole timing to hire Saban probably would have been thrown off.

‘98 was THE most painful season for me as a fan...literally lost sleep after games thinking about “what if”. Sucked terribly at the time, but am extremely grateful for the results which ensued for the past 20 years.

UGA loss was crushing, that was a winnable game against a young qb. To have a real title shot LSU needed to win one of the two against UGA and FL. Losing both was devastating.

If I remember right the FL game was LSU's last decent game on defense, we had a pick 6 called back due to someone lining up offside, that one play pretty much lost LSU the game.

LSU wasn't going to win the SEC with that defense, but with a few different breaks that is easily a 8 to 9 win team...which still would have been a disappointment with the expectations going in to the season.

The bad thing about 1998 was we had just turned the corner and had two seasons where things were looking on the up and up after five dreadful seasons. We thought we were past that, only to go right back to it for another two seasons.

98 and 99 were a couple of the most un-clutch teams in LSU football history. There were like 8 or 9 games in those 2 years that came down to the last possession, and they lost ALL of them.

In 1998-1999 we went 0-8 in games decided by a TD or less.

DiNardo made mistakes, but we had some very bad luck those seasons as well.

Rabbit hole Friday...

LSU lost 5 games by less than one score, in almost all of those games LSU had the lead in the 2nd half and the defense gave up a game tying and game winning score.

The FL game LSU lost by 12, but it was a close game and LSU should have had a 3rd quarter lead, but a Fred Booker pick 6 got called back for someone lining up offsides for a 10 point swing on that drive. Also Tyler threw an endzone INT late in the 3rd.

LSU did get hammered by Arky the last game on the road, team was done by that point.

If LSU had defense that was even 8th or 9th, not dead last in the SEC that year they win the West and maybe the SEC

Lou Tepper
Champ Bailey

The loss to Georgia set the tone for a team that could not seal the deal.

Remember Nick Saban’s first year, he said the players had “a brook trout look” instead of a team than knew how to win.
