Willie Sims would have started for every SEC team that year except Kentucky and may have for them as well.
1980-81
next is a close
1979-80
1985-86
without the injuries and N. Wilson ruled out (grr) could have pushed the 1980-81 team.
1986-87
1978-79 beat number 1 Kentucky with it's starting five fouled out.
1989-90
2005-06
1991-92 lack of a guard.
You the winner.
If we could have kept Macklin (ankle & finger)and Scales (going pro) together for three years. If Taylor does not have to sit out a year for grades - and Allen transfer. Reynolds leaving early. On and on. I always said Dale was one player away from the title, and had that one on the team but lost him due to injuries or grades.

Bob Petit and the 1953 team
Ok weak at the guard spot.
As in very weak.
I know a person that was on the team with Bob in 51 if I remember correct, they had better guards and a center that was good and tall, because the coach they all left the team. The person I know went on to play track and Harry saw him one day and said he would be a good basketball player and the track coach Al Moreau had to tell Harry he was on your team.
This is before Bob prefixed his outside shooting.
Ned Clark is the second best player on the team.

There have been plenty of teams with a lot of talent that didn’t perform up to potential . 1990 was a classic case. They had no chemistry at all. 1981 was the best team. 1980 was second best.
Yeah there are two things at play here...I think some are confusing most talented with best and they are two completely different things.
80-81 was best, hands down. After they lost in the Great Alaskan shootout to Arkansas early they reeled off 26 straight wins and lost only the last game of the year at newly opened Rupp arena cause the ref swallowed his whistle when they fouled Hi-C going to the goal for the game winner at the end.
For some reason Dale de-emphasized the SEC tourney if he knew we had a bid solidified, something I always disagreed with and we half assed that losing to Georgia, then rolled everyone on the tourney including a revenge thrashing of Arkansas in the Sweet 16.
Rudy hurt his finger or no telling what might have been against Indiana. We were winning that game at half anyway and Dale kept us in the locker room so long we did not have time to even warm up the second half something that never sat well with me.
But that team was best.
Most talented...everyone says it was the Shaq/CJ/Stanley team but I think a good argument can be make for the 84-85 team that had Redden, Blanton, Derek Taylor, Nikita, John Williams, Anthony Wilson, Jose Vargas, Dennis Brown and Ice Reynolds

There were two very bad calls in the Indiana game in 1981
Thomas had 2 fouls on him before the half, Ethan was not only quicker but was a smarter player on the court.
Ethan got set twice to take a change from Thomas just before the half, the refs called blocking, I was at the game.
In no way was it a block, Thomas was struggling to get the ball up court Ethan saw it and set him up to take the charging call just like on the other calls on Thomas.
Refs blow the calls which let Indiana take control of the game in the second half.

The correct answer is 1981. It had not occurred to me that this was debatable.
The 1980 team may have been more talented with the Astronaut. They likely also made the Final Four if not for facing Louisville and Darrel Griffith. Macklin was psyched out because he had never beaten his old high school friend and rival Griffith from Louisville and played poorly.

It is not debatable. However, there are a lot of kids on this site that can't name a player off that team.

The golden age of LSU Basketball started in 1977-78 season until the final four of the 1980-81 team.
The next great teams started in 1984-85 team and ended with the 1986-87 team.
Then comes the Chris Jackson-Geert Hammink teams 1988-89 team until the 1992-93 team.
So it could be said 1977-78 until the 1992-93 was the true Golden Age of LSU basketball.

Yeah, I don't remember that, but I remember we could not buy a bucket and it wasn't all Indiana's defense. Again I go back to our not coming out to warm up in the second half cause Dale kept us in the locker room too long. I still wonder if it might have been different if he'd given his kids time to warm up a little.

I may be wrong, but I think that was the game that Shaq was on fire and Dale sat him down to rest...Indiana took advantage of it.
But 1986 was the magic year beating #1 KY and #3 Memphis State.

They didn't dominate Florida UF had Horvard and Noah and beat us 3 times that year I believe.

The 1981 was the best if Rudy Maclin stayed healthy we might have had a chance at beating Indiana.

1980-81: Starting Five
G: Howard Carter (16.0 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, 1.1 SPG)
G: Ethan Martin (11.5 PPG, 5.6 APG, 2.9 RPG, 2.4 SPG)
F: Rudy Macklin (15.9 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.8 SPG)
F: Leonard Mitchell (10.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG)
C: Greg Cook (9.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.0 SPG)
After losing to Arkansas in the Great Alaskan Shootout, Dale Brown spoke to the team and reminded them that no one is going to lay down and die for them just because they were LSU. THAT'S how intimidating we were back then. Our players assumed we would win every game because they knew they were better.
But after they were taught the lesson about never looking past an opponent, they would go on to win 26 straight games (17 Consecutive SEC Games).

Points per Game: 79.2
Opp. Points per Game: 68.0
