Schedules for all conferences recently came out and the virus numbers haven’t changed since that time to warrant this panic today. Are league commissioners and university presidents concerned strictly about liability? Players have the option to opt out or play. Something as simple as the players and team personnel signing waivers must not be an option.

IMO more university presidents are now involved. Take the University of Maryland who lost a football player to heat exhaustion in 2018. It led to Coach Durkin being removed and led to the University President Loh resigning effective in June 2020. The new UMD president just started a month ago. One of his first meetings with the Big Ten is on fall sports during Covid. He's likely to vote to cancel or postpone as he's seen what losing a player can do to anyone in his position. He's going to vote conservatively and UMD will lose $ from TV, but he'll keep his job and local politicians will endorse his decision.

Emmert sent out a message a few days ago to each NCAA division's council of presidents saying "make a decision about fall sports championships by August 21"

D2 & D3 announced cancellations of fall sports championships almost immediately

D1 is now on the clock

D2 and D3 made those decisions purely for financial reasons. D1 (particularly power 5) has resources for testing and depend largely on tv money to fund athletics and some of the university, even if there are no fans. This screams liability to me.

why D1 kept hope alive as long as possible... but do you really think there's going to be a big breakthrough within the 2 weeks to the deadline?

absolutely agree... and you know someone was already prepping a lawsuit... I'd be stunned if it wasn't

This is purely political at this point and I feel sorry for any of you that can’t see that.

True and not hard to figure out. Universities have turned to liberal progressives. They are all in with the House of representatives to keep the schools closed so they can get a different president in office. The hell with all of us who follow athletics. We are collateral damage.

Four of the five worst states where the virus is spreading uncontrolled (Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas) host SEC schools. One hosts the championship game. We reopened with inadequate testing and no contact tracing. Time to pay the piper.

Downvote if you think I am wrong but I am not.

Schools are starting and so are sports.

Atlanta area is not all of Georgia just like NYC is not all of NY.

zero top down leadership, direction and decision making. From the top of our government, no one will own this. All deflection...

Result = placating to the lowest common denominator.

It's not just football, it's school, business, industry, civil liberties...

UMD also has 6 players opting out of the 2020 season, so there it is!

Fortunately the HOR doesn’t have any authority over the opening or closing of schools. They might be able to threaten any state that’s doesnt keep them closed, but IMO Dems do it at their on peril.
