We’ve played freshmen at safety. We haven’t started many freshman at safety; but to that point, here’s how many games the guys you listed started at safety during their freshman seasons:

Tyrann Mathieu: 0

"Start" is many times a formality and isn't an accurate gauge of a player's role. No idea why you would introduce that as a metric. To distill Tyrann's contribution in 2010 to "0 starts" is misleading. For someone with "0 starts," how did he accomplish all this?

Made an immediate impact as a true freshman, serving as a reserve cornerback and as the nickel back … Played in all 13 games with one start at left cornerback against Louisiana-Monroe … Ranked first in the SEC and fifth nationally with five forced fumbles and tied for first in the conference in fumble recoveries with three … Led the team with seven pass breakups … Fourth on the team in tackles with 57 … Was an absolute playmaker on the season with 8.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, seven pass breakups, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions … Earned Cotton Bowl Defensive Most Outstanding Player award after the best game of his young career in which he recorded seven tackles, one tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, one sack and one pass breakup … Narrowly missed his then-career high in tackles with eight at Arkansas to go along with a sack and two tackles for loss … Credited with six tackles, 0.5 TFL, one pass breakup that led to an interception and one QB hurry versus Ole Miss … Recorded four tackles and one PBU versus Alabama, and his PBU led to Kelvin Sheppard’s interception … Tremendous effort at Florida where he recorded two solo stops, forced a fumble that he recovered and broke up a pass … Made his first career interception and his first career fumble recovery against West Virginia … Was great against Mississippi State as he tallied four tackles, one six-yard sack, a forced fumble and a PBU … Outstanding in his first game as a Tiger, recording nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble in the opener against North Carolina … Showed great instincts and knowledge of the game during the fall and earned the No. 2 spot at right cornerback behind Patrick Peterson.

To the OP's question, I was merely suggesting that one of the reasons we've struggled at safety is because BK (through his first three recruiting cycles) didn't recruit anyone who could excel at the position. Other HCs did. Why didn't BK?

He accomplished none of that at safety. He played corner and nickel as a freshman. It’s in the first sentence of the LSU bio excerpt you quoted.

And I was suggesting that Spears - who came out of the 2nd full HS class under Kelly - might be a guy who can excel at the position, but that we don’t really know yet because most safeties (including most of the guys on the list you posted) take time to develop and learn the position.

Having a safetys coach that is never really coached safeties is not great.

COACHING EXPERIENCE
2013 Valley City State (defense)
2014 Nicholls State (outside linebackers)
2015-16 Louisiana-Monroe (graduate assistant – safeties, defensive line)
2017-20 Northwestern State (linebackers, 2017; safeties, 2018; outside linebackers, 2019; safeties, special teams coordinator, 2020)
2021 LSU (analyst – linebackers)
2022-23 Missouri (linebackers)
2024 LSU (safeties)

this has to change imo, along with OC and OL coaches for LSU to be a top 12 team contender with the brutal schedule before us.

The ONLY remarkable thing for any coach is winning. So far he is mediocre the last three seasons so far as goals are concerned.
