I was told that every coach (that mattered) on campus wanted Artigues as AD, and Artigues was specifically requested by Saban as well.
This was all very early in the process when we were taking off/putting on the interim tag for Verge on a daily basis.
I'm assuming that week, Saban pulled his name and said he'd just advise the AD on their search. But I do know JJ and KM wanted Artigues.
