I'd pay to watch that battle royal catfight. Maybe in mud?

It's "You know you were a member of the LSU Tiger Band If....."
Go sign up and let your opinions be known. We discuss this kind of stuff on there everyday. It's all TB Alums, so you're amongst "Family" so to speak...…....

"Southeastern Conference Marching Band Competition"
quote:I disagree.
i wouldn't. it undermines the nature of college band - FUN. competition is hard. lots of work. lots of practice. lots of pressure. when we came back from summer corps, the last thing we wanted was for tiger band to be serious
I marched Madison one summer and still wanted TB to be "Serious."
I think most of the current band members (And SEC football fans) would enjoy a friendly competition against the other SEC bands) No special preparation. Just pick your favorite show from the season and perform it...……..

I agree. This would be very cool and band students would likely enjoy it. Colorguard loves Winter Guard so band members probably would like some competition as well.

being an assistant director of the marching band at Texas

According to members of the color guard, this (winter guard) is one of the reasons their numbers have declined.

The band members would bitch and complain about having to do something extra. Tiger Band members moan and complain about something they’re not being forced to do more than anything I’ve ever known.

perhaps with a shotgun? they can't force people to audition. why is that so hard for you to understand?
If you don't understand the nature of recruiting, then we cannot have a discussion. If Frank, Linda, and Roy needed trumpets, they went after trumpets. They did not look out the office door and say, "I don't see any, so I guess that's all there is." Those directors recruited from ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES. That's how football does it too.

You can dismiss all of these accolades if you choose
yes. they are silly.
If you think your opinion is more accurate than the current music professionals, then we cannot have a conversation about this. The John Philip Sousa Foundation/Sudler Award, national polls (Huffington Post Top 10, ESPN Battle of the Bands, SEC Band Directors unanimous choice as #1), Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, Invitation to represent the United States in Dublin Ireland for the St. Patrick's Day Parade, etc., etc., etc.

different eras. different priorities for people. you're not comparing apples to apples.
Halftime magazine featured a story about "exploding" enrollment in college marching bands across the US. You think LSU has some kind of special excuse.
The countless awards Frank, Linda, and Roy have received are the testament to their knowledge and expertise (you said they were lazy). These are the reasons we cannot have a cogent conversation because your opinions are not based on the opinions of professionals, just you.

Frank Wickes was a great recruiter. He got a lot of great players out of Florida and the D.C. area that would have never come to LSU.
Absolutely. With Wickes' reputation I'm quite sure that students would come from anywhere. Out of state tuition waivers in place back in the day probably helped things also.

That said, I don't doubt that the current band administration is trying to phase both them and the colorguard out. That was one of the issues at hand when control of Tiger Band was removed from the athletic department and placed under the School of Music. Roy KIng asserted that is was a money grab to get the stipends usually awarded to the auxiliary groups.
It might have been King's assertion, but it has not come to pass yet and will never happen. That would be career suicide.

Yes! Frank drew folks from near and far. BTW, those out of state tuition waivers went away in 2009 (for the 2010 school year).

Don't even try to say Texas is better. If so post the video that's better than the Titanic sinking, or the x wing fighter from Star Wars, of the bicycle form ET. It's ok to say another school is better at something. Especially if it is the band

That could be one of the more crazy things you've said. Winter Guard is typically an optional activity from what I know of it (which is admittedly not a lot). So why would this drive prospective Color Guard members away? Come on. Seriously.

Wickes is a legend and built an amazing program with great help from others like King and Moorehouse. If the tuition waivers went away starting in the 2010 school year then it definitely helps to further explain reduced numbers of prospective students in the recent years.

I never said that Texas has a better band. It's certainly bigger and louder (Longhorn Band is over 400 members), but I didn't say they are better.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of spell outs (Beef for example was pretty lame) or moving pictures on the field. Seems very high school-like to me.

Because of the small size of the color guard, there was pressure for every member to participate. Winter guard requires a lot of extra time and some wanted to focus on grades. Prospective members might not want to deal with this pressure but the bigger issue is the retention of current members. Both of these aspects (according to some of the members who are no longer on the squad) attributes to the low numbers.

If you have a video of a high school band making the Titanic sink please post it.

Way to be in 2018. You wouldn't happen to be a doctor at Michigan State by any chance would you?
