It's not so much all about Jefferson to get excited. Like others stated the defense really let us down last year as well.. He played well enough to be 2-0 as a true starting freshman qb..

The reason for the optimism is this team is still one of the most loaded/talented teams in the entice NCAA.. and now we have a new defensive coordinator and a little extra seasoned talented pocket passer qb who happens to be able to run very well and make plays when he needs to.

I'm good with sticking up for a guy who's getting beat up when he's not around to defend himself. He was and is our QB, whether a starter or backup.

But, some folks, I don't know, it's like they want "their" guy no matter what happens. If they hyped something up, they'll dig the hole deeper and deeper instead of throwing down the shovel and admitting something to themselves. It's strange, but common.

but we didn't simply lose that game due to d

LOL. your little head shaking emoticon doesn't really address the issue there Doc. The problem JJ had in his first two times of seeing major action (Ole Miss and Ark) was the same for both. He had early success then was shut down late. Now this is fairly understandable due to his limited knowledge of the offense. He looked good versus Ga. Tech and I expect him to be able to lead us well this year, but you need to stay objective about the issue. Ark shut down our offense to a great degree in the second half mostly due to JJ's inexperience. The d was pathetic too. Both played a part in losing that game.

the question with optimism is not "why" but "why not!"

let me introduce you to P&G goggles, you can take them off AFTER we don't live up to expectations. Hindsight is always 20/20...

OK, I'll play. Even if you give up a pick 6 a game, that means the D still has to give up at least 25 points in order for LSU to lose a game.

The prime example given was Ark. I dont care if you're a freshman, red shirt fresh, or possibly a soph. If your D gives up 25 points a game, 8-5 is a damn good offensive year in the SEC.

You're mostly right. But, up 30-14 with 3rd and 29 inside the 5, and the T.J. and R.A. penalties... the defense lost this game in a most horrific way.

I'm not sure it's what he's done, it's more what he hasn't done (ie pick 6)

That's correct, he hasn't played against Auburn, Bama, Georgia, or Florida, which makes him our hero--ranter Brain-trust.

Maybe bc we watched the GTech game and he looked like a stud? Ya think that leads to at least a little optimism? People are excited that we have a QB with a ton of talent who also appears to have a good head on his shoulders. Nothing more than that.

Chicken should set up 2 boards. One for the optimistic positive thinking fans and the other for the ones who are downers. Maybe this way, the rest of the world could see that it is a hand full of people who constantly belittles players, coaches, and everything else concerning LSU. Maybe Negative post could automatically just pop up on another page so we wouldn't have to read it. I would be 100% in favor of any negative post concerning and naming current, past, and potential players be automatically deleted. I just don't see where it benefits the program or the image of the school.

Jefferson will have his good and bad games this season. It is a very reasonable assumption, he has talent everyone on LSU roster is talented. Yet when schedule get tough the question becomes does he try to do to much or does he play within the offense.
It sounds simple but really it is not, I mean nerves, jitters, emotions, and hype of games gets these players fired up. Playing Florida at home he could come out wanting to light world on fire and end up shooting himself in foot. OR he could come out and go 11 for his first 11.
None of us can predict the future, if we could can someone tell me Saturday's Powerball Numbers?

Let me see if I got this ....
He could play good or he could play bad. He could do too much or he could play within himself. He could be fired up or have the jitters and shoot himself in the foot. We could win or we could lose....

Brilliant, thanks for the insight.

They were both freshmen - Lee and Jefferson. They both had freshmen moments. They both showed flashes of greatness - Jefferson in the GT game (that was a huge stage with bright lights for a true freshman), and Lee led comebacks against Auburn, and the largest comeback in LSU history. Yes, they both played like freshmen at times, Jefferson particularly against Arkansas, and Lee had some tough stretches throughout his run, particularly against UGA (though he played well in that game for some stretches.) The optimism is based on potential and the flashes we saw.

It should be tempered by realistic expectations however.
