We are in Portal Season so I wanted to go back and revisit last years LSU transfers

As we sit here watching fans and posters—many of whom struggle to act like rational adults—melting down about LSU losing players to the transfer portal, I thought it might be useful to revisit how things went for players who left last season. Spoiler: it’s rarely as bad as people make it seem.
Here’s a breakdown of last year’s departures and their performance at their new schools:
Defensive Players
• Jeremiah Hughes (Mich. St.): 4 tackles in 2 games (backup).
• Ryan Yaites (Cal): 12 tackles in 5 games (backup).
• Jaxon Howard (Minnesota): 8 tackles in 5 games (backup).
• Bryce Langston (Florida Atlantic): 8 tackles in 5 games (backup).
• Fitzgerald West (Louisiana): 7 tackles in 6 games (backup).
• Denver Harris (UTSA): 13 tackles in 9 games (backup).
• Tygee Hill (Oregon State): 2 tackles in 2 games (backup).
• LT Welch (Arizona State): 13 tackles, 1 INT (pick-six) in 9 games.
Offensive Players
• Conner Gilbreathe (Boise State): Transitioned from TE to OT; played in 2 games as a backup.
• Joe Cryer (Southern Miss): No stats, DNP. Once again in portal
• Khai Prean (Tulane): Played in 1 game (vs. SELA); no stats.
• Logan Diggs (Ole Miss): Sat out most of the year with a knee injury; has yet to play.
• Tre Bradford (Grambling): 20 carries, 78 yards.
• Armani Goodwin (UAB): 14 carries, 88 yards.
• Jackson McGohan (Wisconsin): Played in 3 games, 1 catch for 3 yards.
Notable Cases
• Lance Heard (Tennessee): Starter. PFF grades consistently ranked near the bottom of the team regardless of position. (Anyone with a PFF account, feel free to add more detail)
• Jalen Brown (Florida State): 5-star recruit. 8 catches for 75 yards in 5 games. No TDs.
• Quincy Wiggins (Colorado): 10 games, 1 tackle. Underwhelming for a former 5-star recruit.
• Duce Chestnut (Syracuse): Returned to Syracuse and had a great season—56 tackles, 1 INT in 12 games. Probably should’ve stayed there to begin with.
Takeaways
Out of all the players who left, very few made a significant impact at their new schools. The portal isn’t always the golden ticket it’s made out to be. Sometimes players just need time, development, or the right fit.
So, maybe we all take a deep breath before panicking about the latest portal moves.
ETA: was asked to add the incoming transfers as well…
Offensive Players
• CJ Daniels (Liberty): 42 catches for 480 yards, 0 TDs. Solid volume but no scores.
• AJ Swann (Vanderbilt): Played in 2 games, went 2/4 for 10 yards.
Special Teams
• Blake Ochsendorf (Louisiana Tech): Played in 9 games with 12 punts for a 40.2-yard average. Split time with Peyton Todd.
• Zavion Thomas:
• Receiving: 20 catches for 188 yards.
• Punt Returns: 13 returns for 49 yards (3.8 avg).
• Kick Returns: 20 returns for 478 yards (23.9 avg).
Defensive Players
• Jay’viar Suggs (Grand Valley State): Played in 12 games, recorded 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
• Gio Paez (Wisconsin): Played in 12 games, registered 19 tackles and 1 sack.
• Jyaire Brown (Ohio State): Played in 3 games, 3 tackles.
• Austin Ausberry (Auburn): Limited depth role, 1 tackle.
• Jardin Gilbert (Texas A&M): Played in 12 games, racked up 48 tackles and 1 INT.

Really didn’t expect Lance to struggle this much.

Hard to argue with those numbers. Thanks for posting

Now do the guys that we had transfer in. I don't think our transfers out are going to kill the team. Womack and Daniels are legitimate losses though.

Fantastic post! Really wish some of those guys stuck it out and developed here though.

This is the stuff I wonder about but too lazy to research. Thank you for your service

Do you have the latest stat for guys who entered the portal and then didn't find a landing spot.
From recollection, about 3-4 years ago, it was pretty dismal, with about 800 players entering the portal, and only about 250 getting a spot on a new school's team.

quote:Prime example why I don't get upset about overpaying for a D-Line. There are many other similar past cases as well.
• Quincy Wiggins (Colorado): 10 games, 1 tackle. Underwhelming for a former 5-star recruit.
quote:He definitely thought a lot higher of himself than anyone else. I wish he had stayed for depth's sake, but I also think he would have been a cancer in the locker room.

I’m not.
I didn’t get people saying he should be RT and Jones to guard. Should have been the other way around. when Lance would come in last year when Emory would get nicked there was a very noticeable drop off.
He would have clearly helped the team had he been flexible and moved inside but obviously he wasn’t.
Hate to have a local talent move on like that but can’t have malcontents not operating in a team framework either

Womack is no loss. He's lazy. Look at how much Swinson and Jones improved from 23 to 24. Womack showed no improvement especially for a 2nd year player with his supposed talent. His 23 stats as a freshman - 12 games 6 tackles 1.5 sacks. 24 stats - 8 games 4 tackles 1 sack. He got suspended for Florida game because of lack of effort in Bama game.
T-Bob and Hester were also saying that LSU was scared to bring in other de talent in case it would scare him off, ie he is afraid of competition.
How is losing a guy like that a loss?

Now do one for the transfers we got. I keep hearing that we are gonna fill in the missing pieces in the portal but you miss on more than you hit

Cryer is already back in the portal. Came across him announcing it and found it funny he still has him in LSU clothes all over his profile, and he literally didn’t make it past spring ball
I had somehow already completely blocked these names out of my memory

I also think this shows that most P4 transfers are transferring for a reason. Sure there is the rare case of a productive P5 guy jumping in the portal to capitalize on NIL to to try to win a championship but the majority of them are transferring because they aren't good enough. Thats why I laugh when people look down on G5 transfers. IMO, a productive G5 player is a MUCH safer bet than a P4 backup that couldn't get PT at his previous school.

After this year Kevin Peoples and Bo Davis are above reproach until proven otherwise.
If they say a guy is half assing it then that guy is half assing it. If they let a guy go in the portal then good riddance.

Let me ask, why do you think Womack will be a legit loss? Because he had a 5* next to his name?
He’s leaving because he’s lazy. He was called out on it. Didn’t put effort into his game. What do you think will change once he’s gone?

Thanks. I thought about doing this and was pretty sure this was the case but I was too lazy to do the work. Nice post. The negatigers and BK haters are going to hate this post. Should be pinned to the top.
