https://lsusports.net/news/2022/01/26/no-12-lsu-womens-basketball-looks-to-rebound-on-road-at-arkansas/

Fayetteville, Ark. – The No. 12 LSU Women’s Basketball team (17-3, 5-2 SEC) will be on the road once again on Thursday to take on Arkansas (13-6, 3-3 SEC) in the Bud Walton Arena at 7:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network in a matchup of the two highest scoring teams in the SEC.

“They live by threes, layups and free throws,” said Head Coach Kim Mulkey. “It is an extremely difficult matchup for our bigs.”

The Tigers are looking to rebound after falling by one point on Sunday at Florida. Khayla Pointer had 35 points, becoming the first LSU player since Seimone Augustus in 2006 (also in a one-point loss at Florida) to drop 35 points.

Thursday’s game, which will mark the halfway point of the SEC schedule for LSU, will be televised on the SEC Network with Courtney Lyle and Christy Thomaskutty. The Tigers will finish with six of its final nine SEC games being televised, including the next four games on the SEC Network. Fans can also listen to Thursday’s game on the LSU Sports Radio Network, 107.3 FM in Baton Rouge, with Patrick Wright and Jeff Palermo.

Pointer was the only player to finish in double figures on Sunday in Gainesville for the Tigers, just the second time this season that LSU has failed to have multiple players score double digits.

The Tigers turned the ball over 19 times at Florida which is something Coach Mulkey has stressed can’t take place, especially while on the road. That has not typically been a problem for the Tigers who have a top-5 turnover margin and assist/turnover ratio in the conference.

“There’s nothing to change; It’s not broken,” said Coach Mulkey. “We’re 17-3. We had a chance to win a game on the road in a very hard-fought game against a talented team that’s playing its best basketball.”

Pointer is just five rebounds shy of becoming the first player in LSU history with 1,500 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds.

Arkansas will be another difficult road conference matchup for LSU as the Razorbacks’ offensive scheme presents potential mismatches for LSU’s bigs. Arkansas takes nearly half of its shots from beyond the three-point line and the Razorback make 34-percent of their attempted threes (No. 3 in the SEC). They make over 9 three-pointers per game, and they attempt close to 30 every game. Arkansas likes to shoot early in the shot clock and also use dribble penetration to score 76.05 points per game, right behind LSU’s SEC leading 76.4 points per game.

“We’ll try to be who we are and guard them,” Coach Mulkey said. “If it doesn’t work then we’ll make adjustments.

“They’ve got to guard us too.”

The Razorbacks get production from all over the court with five players averaging double figures. Makayla Daniels scores 14.7 points per game, Amber Ramirez scores 13.1, Sasha Goforth averages 11.6 and both Samara Spencer and Erynn Barnum are at 10.2 points per game.

If LSU can apply good defensive pressure and force Arkansas to miss its quick shot attempts, then the Tigers’ rebounding outlook appears good. LSU is No. 3 in the SEC with a +9.75 rebounding margin, grabbing 29.6 defensive rebounds per game. Comparatively, Arkansas is towards the bottom of the conference with a -0.89 rebounding margin and the Razorbacks grab just below 12 offensive rebounds per game.

In Coach Kim Mulkey’s first season at LSU the Tigers are off to their best start since the 2006-07 season when they started 20-2.

Coach Mulkey is one win shy of 650 throughout her head coaching career

LSU leads the SEC in scoring offense (76.4) and scoring margin (+18.1). LSU’s scoring offense ranks No. 23 in the nation the the scoring margin is No. 11.

LSU’s 46.7-percent shooting is No. 2 in the SEC and No. 9 in the country

The Tigers’ rebounding has also been dominant and LSU is No.3 in the SEC with a +9.75 rebounding margin which also ranks No. 9 in the country. Autumn Newby grabs 7.89 rebounds per game for LSU, tied for No. 8 in the conference

The LSU defense has also played well and limits opponents to shooting 25.6-percent (No. 3 in the SEC). When LSU holds opponents below 39.9-percent shooting, the Tigers are undefeated.

The backcourt duo of Khayla Pointer and Alexis Morris has been exceptional scoring the ball. Pointer is No. 3 in the SEC with 19.0 points per game and has scored at least 20 in 10 games. Morris has scored 14.28 points per game is No. 19 in the SEC in scoring.

Morris has scored in double figures in 16 of the 19 games she has played in since joining LSU.

Pointer is five rebounds shy of reaching 500 career rebounds. When she reaches that milestone, she will become the first player is program history to reach 1,500 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds.

Pointer’s 35 points in Sunday’s loss at Florida were the most points scored by a LSU player aince Seimone Augustus put up 35 at Florida in 2006. She has scored in double-figures in 10 consectuive games.

Center Faustine Aifuwa has shot the ball extremely well and leads the SEC in field goal percentage in conference games. Through 6 SEC games, Aifuwa is shooting 65.1-percent which is nearly 10 points higher than the No. 2 (.554) shooter in the conference.

Ryann Payne had a good game in the last outing. Cherry had an off day with turnovers and shooting the ball. Hopefully Ryann will continue the good play and Cherry will come back around.

Faustine seems to have regressed to her pre-Kim Mulkey form on both ends of the court.

Has Nikki Fargas snuck back into the building?

Arkansas has talented shooters, but yes LSU needs to pressure them more.
