This happened to my grandparents recently. They are in their 90’s. My grandpa still drives…his son won’t take the keys. The scammers convinced them to take cash out of the bank but their home health nurse caught on and informed my aunt in time to stop them.

Publishers clearinghouse. I can’t believe they fell for that.

That exact thing happened to my mom. Of course, in Mississippi no one at the bank asked questions. She sent three different Cashiers checks totaling $88,000. Thankfully her caregiver saw the last one, alerted me and I was able to stop payment and get the perp's account frozen.

Was a bank branch manager 20 years ago. These fraudsters make me sick. Had a guy come in. Just some dumb old dude. He wanted to do a wire overseas and then he starts telling me the story. I told him this "girl" he was going to send money did not exist. He was upset and said she was real and that she loved him. This was going to be like a $1,000 wire. I told him I would refuse to do it if I had to but he finally voluntarily left.

He comes in a few weeks later in a panic. His account was negative $60,000. He said all kinds of people had been calling him from the bank and threatening him. Turns out, the "girl" overseas was going to get money sent to him from a benefactor somewhere and all he had to do was do the final wire transfer to her. Don't know why this made sense to him. The fraudsters got some idiot at one of our banks in California to do a transfer over the phone from supposedly their account into this old dude's account here. He then went into one of our other branches. The teller even called the California folks and they confirmed that the deposit was ok. At that point he wired it to the "girl". Then, the person whose account was stolen from went to the bank freaking out and they realized they had screwed up really bad. So they credited that customer and debit from old dude. He was fricked. I tried to tell him. People will fall for anything.

And to beat all, the "girl" didn't just ghost and disappear. He was still communicating with her and she was telling him about when she would be coming to see him.

Did you close his account and tell him to go be stupid somewhere else?

Nah. Dude was pretty old, and had a foot in the grave already. It was a self-solving problem at that point.
