Yes, on a play at home plate, stand on home plate with the ball and wait for the ump.

Don't throw at advancing runners.
Don't go tag the guy who missed home.

The ump will call the guy out when the play is over. If he does not make a call, appeal, step off, throw home, runner missed the plate.

JJ didn't know that rule, and it cost LSU the game.
If he tells his catcher to touch home plate, LSU wins.
If one is going to coach at this level, there should be no rule that isn't completely understood.

I think both the ump and Coach Jay know the rule.

However, the ump did NOT make the call. His call, right or wrong, was the ball was still in play.

Eta. Or the runner was still in play in this case. I don't agree, but that was the call.

No

Ump ruled SAFE on the 2nd guy at the plate.

Then, I think, we tagged the 1st runner by the dugout and he called him OUT.

And that was the correct move for the ump at that time. It was up to the defense to appeal. Which could've easily been done live or in time out. Jay really screwed it up by sprinting out of the dugout.

Much like when a guy hits a homer and misses a bag. It's up to the defense to appeal otherwise the ump says nothing.

The play at the plate is an unusual play, IMO. Jack Merrifield taking off from 2b is an elementary error as was Collins not backing up at the plate.

The runner was tagged out by the dugout, then the ball was thrown home to get the runner but was ruled safe. The runner that was tagged out was only the second out.

he could have called him out somewhere during the walk to the dugout but it's a fun play to see if he circles around and attempts to go back to the plate to touch it or the other runners try to advance.

Frankly the umpires aren't there to have fun....they are there to call the game by the exact letter of rule.

Immediately we should have went and tagged him.

Wrong. Simply standing on home with the ball would have initiated the “challenge” and forced the ump to make the call.

One thing I don’t understand is with the no call on runner one, once the runner from third touched home didn’t he technically pass runner one? Shouldn’t runner two in that instance be out like our pinch runner?

I can’t fathom how Collins thought he was fine to just walk and tag the runner by the dugout while not paying attention to the guy at third base.

How about because his coach came running out of the dugout screaming at him to do so?

That’s on JJ

Yes he should have had the sense to wait for time to be called....rough place to lose composure.

Where was Collins on backing up the catcher? Way out of position a bit down the first base line. He's where he was supposed to be, nothing happens. But the way the game was going, crazy, Nicholls would have probably base hit the runners in anyway.

But you still have to check the other runner on 3B. The way Collins just walked with his back turned to the base runner between 3rd and home plate was really bad baseball.

We deserved to lose. Nicholls played great defense, but one of our top relievers blew the lead in the 8th inning and then lost the game in the 9th by giving up a run and our starting catcher let a ball from the outfield through his legs to allow a much needed insurance run to score. Add in the massive base running mistake to assume a ball would drop when Nicholls had been robbing hits in the outfield all game long…. We got what we deserved.

I stand corrected.

Eta. When I was watching I was only watching the ump waiting for the call. He goes off camera then you see him call the second runner SAFE.

This right here. I dont usually like to blame coaches, and I absolutely love the job that Jay Johnson does, but I think he made a mistake here. The runner that missed the plate would have been eventually called out.

The easier play is stay put and guard home.

I'm grabbing the ball, telling my pitcher or cather to field home. Tag out, then ready to throw back to home for another out if he tries to go. Aggressive double play.

I was wondering the same thing.

If the trailing runner touched home BEFORE the ump ruled the lead runner out, why wouldn’t he be out for passing the lead runner?

Nichole got what they deserved. We didn’t play to championship standard and thank goodness it was a mid week pretty nothing game but I won’t take away from Nichols. They played lights out.
