I could not agree more! The young Saban we had simply was not the well-polished, near-perfect Saban that friggin alabam lucked into getting. Yes, Saban won us a title, and I’m grateful for that, but yes indeed, that 2002 collapse is absolutely on him.

Yes, very frustrating. But, he won and a game manager type because not the best offense play calling. Reason we won on that team was DEFENSE!!

Every LSU fan understood what Mauck was back then. He was a game manager. Someone who handed the ball off, threw or ran for first downs, and tried to limit turnovers until the defense could get on the field and annihilate the opposing offense. The defense won it all by allowing only 252 yards and 11 points per game.

Was Mauck frustrating to watch?
He threw a pick 6 on the opening drive at ole miss and threw 2 more INTs that game
He fumbled near the goal line on the opening drive of the national championship game and had 2 more INTs thrown.
You tell me?
But we won it all so WGAF

Rewatched some of 2003 games…vs Ole Miss and Oklahoma. Pretty ugly I was a lil too young to judge his QB play at the time
He was pretty rough before the UF game in 2002, but he was very good overall in 2003. He made plays when we needed them and improved tremendously as a passer considering where he started.

Apparently not since some are putting him in the same breath and Burrow, Russell, and Flynn which he was not
good, gritty football player that had a hell of a team around him

not really because he was much much better than the other QBs we had.

You thinking of AJ Finley?

I totally forgot about AJ Finley. He wasn't that bad-- the whole team and the entire structure of that COVID season was so screwed up. Finley got pressed into action after MB's season-ending injury. I don't think he really expected to play that year. Well he did play, and had both some good and very bad moments.

I remember watching this game and thinking wow, something is different now, then Mauck goes out for the season, lol. They beat South Carolina the next week I think, but after that, the season went to shite. Still had a chance to got to SEC championship game though

Back then the strategy was build a big line, run the ball, pass occasionally, and overwhelm your opponent physically. QB play was not the biggest factor. This was when I heard the term Game Manager thrown about.
This style of play phased out in 2012-2014 in favor of pass heavier offenses and this is when Les Miles fell behind the times and Saban adapted…

Different era man. Style of play on Offense was different.
Think game manager, throw the ball maybe 12, 14 times a game.

Guy was just a winner. Whatever it took #18.

He was alright. Sort of like how Saban won titles with Greg McElroy and Jake Coker

In the last 22 years offenses have advanced. Dual threat QBs are more durable as leagues make the game safer. I can imagine watching any 2003 QB against Jayden Daniels is like night and day
