I get it but he also had the advantage of pitching in the dead bat AND ball era unlike Peever, McDonald and now Skenes.

Skenes and Peever would be a great comparison EXCEPT the competition Skenes is facing top to bottom is much more difficult.

It was rob62 who said it. I got you confused with him because MOT posted two threads in one response about idiots who can’t come to grips with how good Crews is. You were one example because you tried to say Walker was a better defender and rob was the other because he tried to name 20 guys with better resumes. Fun threads.

They will be fine once they get some pitchers back. Dude is a good coach and recruiter.

I agree with you. But Skenes isn’t walking people either. His swing and miss on his slider is absurd. He has a changeup but rarely needs it.

Skenes is a better pitcher than Nola. I'm sorry to ruin this for you guys but hes painting corners with 100 mph stuff and has 2 other s.o. pitches. He has a better arm with Nolas control.

Is it possible Skenes and Crews could go down as the two most talented Tigers to ever come through this program

Most talented? I think they both might very well be already

Yeah, it was a backhanded complement because Van Horn is a raging douchebag. We started off the season with 3 major douchebag coaches, getting progressively worse as the season goes. This weekend is the big finale.

I just don’t know if I can ever get on board with this. Nola was the closest to perfect pitcher I’ve ever seen. Sure it was the dead bat and ball era, but he had control like I’ve never seen before or since. And you knew going into every game he was going to give you 8 innings.

Nola was absolutely great but I don't think people realize just how much pitchers benefitted from that dead bat and ball era. It basically eliminated the home run from all but guys with Crews and White type pop. And even guys like that might have only hit like 10-12. Pitchers of course knew this and didn't have to worry much about making mistakes. Remember how boring the game had become because even crushed balls that should have absolutely been home runs weren't leaving the park. So Nola was absolutely great but no doubt his numbers were much better due to the dead bat and ball era.

Van Horn is a great coach but I just can’t stand him. Glad we have Jay

I’m too young to have watched McDonald, but Nola’s era was much more pitcher friendly than Skenes’.

I had never heard of Jay Johnson before we hired him. Now that we have him, I don’t want anyone else.

When Paul announced his retirement, I was wish Van Horn was younger and we could poach him. He’s a great coach and a much better guy than some other SEC coaches that people wanted.

Ben pitched in an era that saw the ball jumping off the bat and flying out of parks.

No he didn’t actually. It was before the gorilla ball era. Lots more HRs now than in the late 80s.

Skenes could still turn out to have the best SINGLE SEASON but he is pitching in a different era than the other two.

Not sure what this comment means. Nola pitched in a much more pitcher friendly era than Skenes is currently pitching in.

I agree that Skenes has a beast of an arm, but sometimes a crafty pitcher can get it done without the physical talent. I think we all saw the difference …

Didn’t they have like 1 or 2 hits off of him? Skenes was a passed ball away from a shutout.

We saw the best arm/ good pitch comparison Friday night. Their starter shut us out, while Skenes gave up a run and was up for the loss until Neil hit that homer off the reliever in the eighth. I agree that Skenes has a beast of an arm, but sometimes a crafty pitcher can get it done without the physical talent. I think we all saw the difference …
But their pitchers weren't "crafty lefties"...

They were Friday night left handed pitchers in the SEC running their fast balls up to 97 with incredible breaking stuff.

Skenes objectively pitched better than both of them.

I remember one season Nola threw a complete game and gave up 1 run to a solo shot, and we lost 1-0…

Cruz quite likely can end the season hitting over 400.

That’s a magic number, and if he hits it, it ends all debate.
