re: UO question: Who is LSU's biggest Rival?

The natural rival is Tulane. That rivalry was big in the early days, but they have sucked for years so we don't care about them anymore (although they have a strange love/hate relationship with us).
The Ole Miss thing was huge in the late 50s and early 60s (the last time Ole Miss was consistently good - had this QB named Manning). We pretty much ruined a couple of their NC runs, while winning one ourselves in 58. Plus Cannon's immortal punt return that won him the Heisman in 59 came against...Ole Miss.
At any rate, in the modern age, we view Ole Miss as the angry little brother. They hate us a lot more than we hate them. They pretty much have a similar relationship with Mississippi State. LSU thinks Mississippi State is essentially irrelevant, as we have not lost to them in years.
The Arkansas thing is totally manufactured. It is a product of Arkansas entering the SEC in the early 1990s. The trophy is stupid, and the teams don't really hate one another, although the animosity is growing. The series has actually produced some quality games, mostly featuring Arkansas shattering our dreams (or almost shattering them).
When the SEC went to 12 teams, we got paired with Florida as a permanent opponent. We play them every year (good luck, huh - Ole Miss got Vanderbilt
). So that is something of a "rivalry" as well, but we can hardly claim to be their biggest rival.
Texas A&M was big in the late 80s and early 90s. We pretty much hate them and they hate us, too. We recruit the same places. If we played more often, they might be our biggest natural rival.

Doc, you're one of my favorite posters... but your top ten list is completely inaccurate. Lest we all forget... LSU hates itself more than any other team!

This is a very divisive issue.
The Duck is trying to destroy us by pitting us against each other!

Everyone else has chimed in so I may as well too.
We used to play Tulane every year. That ended. We don't give a rats arse about Tulane, but they still hate us with so much passion and fury that they don't allow any of their students on campus to wear LSU garb.
Ole Miss has been discussed and I've nothing new to add.
We used to play Texas A&M frequently but that series ended. I remember going to a game in College Station. One of the guys that was with our group got shitfaced drunk and barfed all over their "sacred grass." He got arrested and thrown in jail. With his one phone call he called the stadium. We found out he was in jail over the stadium PA system. (They announced to call him at the jail.)
We used to play Rice every year too, but that series ended. They were our whipping boy.
Currently our big games are against our SEC West opponents and Florida, our permanent SEC East opponent (we play every team from the West division and 3 East opponents, one of them permanent, other two cycling every two years).
I think the piggies are trying to force our matchup in to a rivalry because I think they're in the same boat as we are... no instate rival. I'd guess that all their old time rivals were their former SWC opponents, and since they no longer play regularly, the rivalries have died down.
ETA: Texas schools don't want to play home-and-home series anymore because they don't want us recruiting in their state. I'd love for Texas and Texas A&M to join the SEC for that very reason (not to mention the boon to TV revenues).

Didn't really read past the first page but: for me the two games I want to win the most are Bama and Florida. Ole Miss (I'm only 22) is an after thought and they seem to have a major little guy syndrome/obsession with us.
I hate Bama because of Nick Saban, they think they are above everyone because of the Bear, (even though since then it has been very even) and personal family rivals.
For Florida, I hate their fans more than anyone, they think the game of football started in the mid 90's with spurrier, and a general sense of unjustified self-superiority.

too long for me to read. Ole miss is a rival, but i feel like that was more when my mom was in school when they had archie. Some older people hate ole miss. Me not so much. I think they are the only team in the west to not make an seccg. Ole miss sucks.
Bama is a rival now because the nick saban deal.
Auburn is a huge rival to me because for years the home team always won the game. It went back and forth back and forth.
UF is a rival. We play them every year, and they dont beat the crap out of us every year like they used to.
The problem is Bama has Tenn and Aburn. Auburn has Bama. UF has UGA and the other florida schools.
Arkansas is creeping up. We have been having trouble with them as of late. We might get stuck with them if they keep stealing wins from us.
I could care less about aTm. We dont play them like we used to. The only time i see us ever playing them again is in the cotton bowl.
We dont have a rival like other schools. Our big rivals from years ago all suck now, or LSU has just passed them up. And the schools we swap wins with now already had rivals in place.

since i've been around a long time, my perspective goes back to the early 60's when LSU and Ole Miss were hated rivals; both programs were about even and often their annual game for for the SEC and sometimes for the NC. when their legendary coach retired (johnny vaught) and integration came to southern colleges, ole miss nose dived and became irrelevant almost. our rivalry died. they still hate us with a passion and maybe more so since LSU's program continued to excell and theirs went in the crapper. us old farts still hate ole miss but most under 50 just ignore them. oddly, that left LSU without a true rivaly, one that we all can embrace and love to hate. we simply don't have one program that we loathe. some hate us; ole miss and arkansas especially. i think the border state thing applies to arkansas. for some reason, we don't hate them. hard to have a rivalry when one side does all the hatin'. in summary, LSU fans just have to be content with arkansas and ole miss hating us and we direct our hate to different teams weekly (team we are playing). of course, we always maintain love/hate feelings with our coaching staff, esp the head coach. sometimes, we even hate the strength and conditioning coach though. we are uber critical but all is well when we win. overall, we are lovers not haters.

Grand Dad is spot on. I fell like LSU just hates whoever they are playing. Really Cant stand any team in the west other than state. Thats just cus i feel bad for them. But if they keep winning games and playing us close i might change my mind.

BTW...the A&M rivalry is fairly one sided.

same thing for Arkansas

Florida ... hands down! I've always hated UF, will always hate UF, and can barely stand supporting them during bowl games against other conferences simply for my love of the SEC.
Ole Miss has never been considered a rival for me. Maybe because I used to date a UM grad.
I can't stand Alabama after Saban but loved them when I lived in Tuscaloosa in the 90s.
I live in southern Oregon now and wear my LSU shirt proudly!!! I rub in LSUs power and the pending loss of OU in Dallas. Sometimes I can't figure out people on the west coast. There doesn't seem to be a vapid love of their football teams like the SEC. Auburn introduced SEC mania ... LSU will shove it down their throats. Can't wait for the game ... I'm going with an Oregon fan.

Ole Piss is the one that carries the most hatred. they can all GEAUX TO HELL!!! As far as recent history I would have to say AU as these games have been deciding the west for a decade or so. As far as Saban and Bama, the Bammers think we hate them but that is just because they are to stupid to realize that Saban left LSU for the NFL not Bama. Arkansas is a made for TV rivalry and not a long term rival as they were not even a memner of the sec untill the expansion of the early 90's. Getting back to the hatred thing I would have to say that UF is a close second to Ole Piss... Sure is a shame that OM is irrelivant, it could be a great rivalry.

As a resident of Baton Rouge, I can tell you it depends who you ask and it changes over time. Most right now will say Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, or Arkansas. Ole Miss is waning and primarily the older generation. Arkansas is increasing.
Both the Arkansas and LSU fans tried to fight being told who their rival was.

Here's one no one has mentioned: Georgia (yes I know it isn't a rival and hasn't been mentioned for a reason BUT...)
I remember in the David Greene days, I hated them. I think they beat us once or twice...and ever since then I've never cared for them at all.
To me, our REAL rivals as of late are probably Alabama and Florida (first two that came to mind when I read the thread title).
I'm only 20, so the Ole Miss/ TA&M/Tulane hate does not reside here. Auburn, kind of. I really dislike Cam Newton, and since he's gone I think that will fade for now.
Bama/Florida always seem to be real important. Arkansas is coming up though, especially after that shite last year. frickin' Hatcher.

At this moment, for me, it's Oregon.
