It's a bit of sore point that comes with being an LSU fan--we really don't have a true hated rival anymore.

A lot of it has to do with just being the farthest West of all the SEC schools (until Arkie joined in 1992). We were invited to be in the original SWC in 1914, but refused, deciding to stay independent until joining the SoCo in 1922, and later the SEC in 1932-33.

So we used to have a lot of games against teams like Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Rice, but over time, conference alignments and the changing face of CFB made those rivalries obsolete (although some TAMU fans still seem to think of LSU as quasi-rivals).

Our 2 traditional rivals were always Tulane and Ole Miss, but Tulane left the SEC after the 1965 season, which was really stupid, considering that they actually kept putting a lot of resources into their program throughout the 70's and into the early 80's, but eventually they just got more and more pathetic, and we broke off our annual game with them, although we still play them from time to time.

The Ole Miss rivalry was really born of the era from 1958 to 1963, when LSU & OM arguably were the 2 best programs in the country over that time. (Texas and Alabama might dispute that.)

But Ole Miss has been tagged as the backwards athletics program of the SEC stuck in the past glories of the pre-integration era, and LSU fans really don't want to be involved with all that. We've moved on to more titles, while Ole Miss has continued to suck, so the rivalry (which as far as I know was never really a big deal until the late 50's anyway) sort of died out.

Based on the extreme awesomeness of LSU-Auburn games from about 1988 to 2007, one would think that the LSU-Auburn rivalry would have naturally grown into a fierce one, but in reality ... not so much. Sadly, it's just a matter of LSU not having any true hated rival, while all the other great programs in the SEC already have more than they know what to do with, and so can't legitimately add LSU to the list.

For example...

Alabama has Auburn & Tennessee
Auburn has Alabama & Georgia
Georgia has GT, Florida, & Auburn
Florida has Georgia & Tennessee

Plus, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, & Athens are all generally close to each other, whereas Baton Rouge is at least 2 states away.

At the moment, LSU just has a bunch of small rivalries that are shallow and ephemeral, with no genuine big rivalries. We do play Arkansas for "The Golden Boot" every Thanksgiving weekend though, so I guess that's worth something.

And maybe someone could explain the Tulane thing too.

We played our first intercollegiate game against them in baseball, and our first football game against them in 1893.

The LSU-Tulane rivalry from the 20's through the 40's was huge ... HUGE. It just belongs to a bygone era, back when people in New Orleans were still pissed off that Huey Long was actually governor.

The pure level of intense hatred kept the rivalry going well into the late 70's, and maybe even the early 80's, but Tulane's self-inflicted demise as a serious athletic program ended the bitterness and replaced it with apathy.

Duck fan, this might frustrate you, but there really is no clear answer to this question.

LSU has no singular hate for any one rival. We kind of spread our hate across the SEC West. No one team is really more hated than the other. We hate them all equally.

We're a bit unique in that regard. Most of the other SEC teams can point to one other team and declare them as their main rival. But not LSU.

It's probably the one thing that we miss from our experience as fans at LSU.

On the positive side, other than possibly Ole Miss, we're not anyone's most hated team either. Most of the time, when LSU rolls into town, the other teams know they're in for a hell of a fight, and that's that. It's not a bragging rights/ancient blood feud thing. We're no one's favorite team to play, and no one's most hated team to play. It's weird, but it's true.

50 years ago, it was a little different. But we're dealing with the here and now. Our "rival" is dead. No one's taken their place. Ole Miss truly hates us... but they still hate Miss State even more. Because of that, we can't be their "singular" rival.

Ole Miss became our most hated rivals in the 50's when we were both playing for national championship honors. Tulane because they are in state but they fell off the map because they can't field a competitive team anymore. Auburn because they always play us close. Alabama because they used to own us and now because Nick is their coach. When Arkansas joined the conference they created the Boot trophy and tried to create a rivalry, but honestly it never took off. The honest answer is there are a lot of teams that we want to beat but they are all just as important conference wise. So we don't really have that most hated now. But for me, it is Auburn this year because we owe them , The officiating at their stadium has robbed us more than once and they are a dirty team that pays their players and they play dirty on the field.

Rivals
[edit] Tulane Green Wave
See also: Battle for the Rag

LSU's oldest rival is Tulane; the first LSU-Tulane football game was played in 1893 and for the first fifty or so years of Tiger football, no team was more hated by LSU fans than the Green Wave. The series, in which they battle for the Tiger Rag, was played continuously from 1919 to 1994. The intrastate rivalry featured two teams which were geographically close (Baton Rouge and New Orleans are roughly 80 miles (130 km) apart) and drew on socio-political tensions between the state's capital and seat of government and its biggest and most culturally important city. As opponents in the SIAA, Southern Conference and SEC, the Tulane rivalry flourished for many years but slowly declined after Tulane left the SEC and de-emphasized athletics. Until 1949, the series was very competitive, with LSU leading 23–18–5; since 1949, LSU has dominated, going 45–4–2. The two teams renewed the annual series in 2006 and ended it again after the 2009 meeting.
[edit] Ole Miss Rebels
See also: Magnolia Bowl

LSU's traditional SEC rival is Ole Miss. Throughout the fifties and sixties, games between the two schools featured highly ranked squads on both sides and seemingly every contest had conference, and at times national, title implications. A trophy has now been named for the LSU-Ole Miss rivalry known as the "Magnolia Bowl". Recently, the second to last regular season game has been between these two colleges. There is still a strong rivalry between both schools.
[edit] Auburn Tigers
See also: Tiger Bowl

While Auburn's rivalries against Alabama and Georgia may overshadow its rivalry with LSU, in recent years, LSU's biggest rival has been the Auburn Tigers. The two share more than just a nickname, as they have both enjoyed success in the SEC's Western Division and plenty of memorable match ups. Either Auburn or LSU has won at least a share of the SEC Western Division championship for eight of the last eleven years. The home team won every game from 2000 through 2007, until visiting LSU defeated Auburn in 2008. Both the 2007 and 2008 games saw LSU win dramatic, come-from-behind victories with last minute touchdown passes. The game between the two rivals has no official name or trophy, but is unofficially referred to by fans and sports commentators as the "Tiger Bowl".
[edit] Alabama Crimson Tide
See also: Alabama-LSU rivalry

LSU and Alabama have played every year since the 1960s, with Alabama holding a historic edge in the series, 43–24–5. Many trace the origins of the rivalry back to a 15-game undefeated streak Alabama had in Tiger Stadium, which is generally considered to be one of the most hostile atmospheres in college football. While their rivalries against Auburn and Tennessee may overshadow their rivalry with LSU, the significance of this rivalry increased after Alabama hired former LSU coach Nick Saban in 2007.
[edit] Arkansas Razorbacks
See also: Battle for the Golden Boot
The Golden Boot trophy is awarded to the annual winner of the Arkansas-LSU football game.

After the Razorbacks left the Southwest Conference in 1990, Arkansas joined the SEC in 1991 and began a yearly rivalry with LSU. Spurred by both the SEC and the schools, LSU and Arkansas have developed a more intense football rivalry. The winner takes home the Golden Boot, a trophy in the shape of the states of Arkansas and Louisiana that resembles a boot. The game, played the day after Thanksgiving until the 2010 season, is usually the last regular season game for each team and is broadcast on CBS. In 2002, the rivalry gained momentum as the game winner would represent the Western Division of the SEC in the SEC Championship Game. Arkansas won the exciting game on a last second touchdown pass by Matt Jones. In 2006, the Razorbacks, who had already clinched the SEC Western Division and were on a 10-game winning streak, were beaten by LSU in Little Rock. In 2007, Arkansas stunned top-ranked LSU in triple overtime, giving them their first win in Baton Rouge since 1993, and again defended the Golden Boot trophy with a last minute touchdown drive in 2008. A 15th ranked LSU would win back the trophy for the first time in two years in 2009 after the Razorback kicker missed a field goal that would have sent the game into a second overtime, solidifying LSU's record as the third best in the SEC as well as a position to go to the Capital One Bowl. The LSU Tigers were defeated at Little Rock in 2010, with Arkansas winning 31-23.
[edit] Florida Gators
See also: LSU-Florida rivalry

LSU is Florida's permanent inter-divisional rival. Florida leads the series 30-24-3. The winner of the Florida-LSU game has gone on to win the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) national championship game three of the last five years. With a few exceptions, this rivalry has been known for close games in recent years, with both teams usually coming into the match-up highly ranked.
[edit] Other SEC opponents

LSU has played Mississippi State more often than any other opponent. However, the series is hardly considered a rivalry, as the Tigers hold a commanding lead and have won 10 consecutive games in the series and 17 of 18 since 1992. Until the 1970s, the game was played far more often in Baton Rouge to allow MSU to reap the benefits of the larger gate at Tiger Stadium (which seated 67,500 at the time, more than twice the 32,500 of Scott Field in Starkville).

LSU and Kentucky played every year between 1949 and 2001, but the yearly meeting was ended when the SEC changed its scheduling format in 2002. Longtime LSU coach Charles McClendon (1962–79) was an All-American at Kentucky from 1948-51 under legendary coach Bear Bryant, and Tiger coaches Paul Dietzel and Bill Arnsparger were also assistants with the Wildcats. LSU has generally dominated the series, although Kentucky won the last meeting, ousting the then-No. 1 Tigers 43-37 in triple overtime in 2007 at Lexington. In the previous game at Lexington in 2002, the Tigers won 33-30 on the Bluegrass Miracle, a 75-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Randall to Devery Henderson on the last play of the game.

Whoa now. Hold on. I could see you were starting to make a good point there, but I think you may have gone a little too far.

LSU Hate-O-Meter for SEC Rivals (Current Level)
1. Auburn (every CFB fan alive should rightfully detest Auburn at the moment)
2. Ole Miss (for the timeless douchieness of Oxford)
3. Florida (the pain from past beatdowns over the last 20 years has still not gone away)
4. Alabama (thank God the "Saban Wars" within the LSU fanbase seem to finally be dying down)
5. Georgia (still haven't forgotten the Richt idiocy from 2007)
6. Tennessee (a brief rise above the rest of the pack for Dooley's perceived whining)
7. Arkansas (they are hated more by many LSU fans who frequent the SEC Rant )
8-tie. Kentucky, South Carolina, Miss. State (hard to hate)
11. Vanderbilt -- NOBODY hates Vanderbilt

DucksflyinPAC, I believe that the true answer here is rather surprising. If you had to pick out the team that pisses us off the most, the team most likely to beat us, and the team with fans that agitate us the most, then the answer is pretty clear. LSU's biggest rival is... LSU. I know it makes no sense, but that's how we roll.

I will speak for me and not for the masses. I frickin hate Ole Piss. I refuse to go to LSU Ole Piss games in Oxfart. I have been to Bama, Florida, Auburn, Vandy, and plan on making the rest of the SEC towns. I agree with what most are saying that there is no real true rival. Ours mostly go on how our season is going and which is the big game(lately its Auburn, Bama, UF(well..when Tebow was there)).

I guess it adds to my hatred for Ole Piss that my mother side of the family all went to State so we share tat in common. We cant really talk about LSU cause they hate LSU almost as much as they hate the Rebs. SO we just talk shite about Ole Miss and drink beers

And FWIW I could give a crap about Tulane...I'm just not old enough to give a shite.

I would disown my child if they decided to go to Ole Miss

This is simply inaccurate. I live in Little Rock, in the heart of Hawg country and the hatred shown toward LSU is above and beyond any other team on there schedule. Arkansas fans that remember the era prior to Arkansas joining the SEC in 1992 may consider Texas their rival, but Texas doesn't care about Arkansas now. Arkansas considers LSU their rival and until LSU considers Arkansas a rival (not just another SEC West game), these games will continue to be nailbiters, especially while Petrino is there.

DucksflyinPAC, something you might not realize is that there is still enough simmering hate, disgust, and/or contempt over what Ole Miss represents for the LSU fanbase to rise up in agreement--once every year--to celebrate the fact that we are not Ole Miss fans.

If you are looking for a window into this often neglected article of a Tiger fan's faith, then a good primer on the subject can be found courtesy of "Bestbank Tiger" and his annual treatise:

SEVENTH ANNUAL TREATISE ON WHY OLE MISS SUCKS

1) They're a bunch of pretentious redneck retards with a grossly inflated opinion of themselves. Contrary to the popular belief in Oxford, you don't get class from tying a blue sweater around a red neck. Even more ridiculous is their belief that they have the best tailgating. Please! They hang around in the Groove and eat cold fried chicken off fine china. The clue train must not stop in Oxford, so I'll have to break the news to them: Hanging a chandelier from a tree and finding a fantabulous centerpiece for your table is not tailgating. Tailgating is about great food. That's why LSU is better than Ole Miss at tailgating (and everything else). Maybe you should save your interior decorating skills for something that needs it, like Vaught-Hemingway.

2) What is Ole Miss best known for? A race riot. Why? Because that's the only time they showed any fight in the last 45 years.

3) They still honestly think they set the standard for class. So how do they explain their treatment of David Cutcliffe? Ten years ago, Tommy Tuberville skedaddled out of town to coach a division rival. Tubby had been their only coach "SINCE INTEGRATION" to field a respectable team without cheating. The weebles replaced Ears with Cutcliffe, the Manning family's favorite offensive guru, which had nothing to do with the fact that Eli was trying to decide where to play his college ball. They probably would have fired Cut as soon as Eli graduated, but Eli's final season was too good. So they fired him after the rebuilding year. Nice people, huh?

4) Much to their surprise, nobody wanted to coach a perennial loser who shafted their previous coach. So they settled on a missing link named Ed Orgeron, the defensive line coach at Southern Cal. But the SEC is a little harder than the Pac-1. O will be remembered for two things. One was ripping off his shirt at his first meeting with the team. The other is the song "Colonel Reb Is Crying", with the "Yawyawyawyawyawyaw" chorus. Orgeron never produced a winning season. Of course, how's that different from any other hOMo coach?

5) A few weeks after Katrina, Bay Bay had one of his assistants call a Tulane assistant and ask how he and his family were doing. Then O took the phone and said "The real reason I'm calling is I heard you might be dropping football and I wanted to get a head start on some of your players." I don't know which is worse--being a sleazy vulture or being desperate enough to poach players from a program that hasn't had a winning Conference USA record since 1998. Ole Priss should never be allowed to live that down.

6) Ole Wuss thinks LSU is one of its biggest rivals. But a rival is defined in the dictionary as "(t)he act of competing or emulating; (t)he state or condition of being a rival." Sorry Rebs, but a bug and a windshield are not rivals. There's only one time in the history of the series when you were even close: 1987-99. Very dark days for LSU. But during that period, the Weebles still won only 6 of the 13 games. Put another way, they had a sub-.500 record against the Archmannardo brain trust. Speaking of Archmannardo, Vandy had a 2-2 record against the Rebels when Dumbardo was coaching in Nashville. Vandy--now that would be a rival. So would State, Wyoming, and Memphis.

7) 5 of the 6 West teams have appeared in the SEC Championship game. Guess which one hasn't made the trip? Nope, not Mississippi State--even Jackie the Clown went to Atlanta. That's right, the weebles. This in spite of having Vanderbilt as a permanent East opponent. The only time they came close was 2003, when Eli fell on his arse and their hopes died. They settled for their first division co-championship and hung a banner for it. They HUNG A BANNER for something Gerry Dinardo accomplished twice.

8) Their most famous alum is Trent Lott, former Rebel cheerleader and Senate Majority Leader. That dude was so dumb he got rolled by Tom Daschle, the biggest moron ever to lead the Senate Democrats. Lott also quit on his constituents less than a year into his new term so he could cash in as a lobbyist. Hotty Toddy!

9) Speaking of the Hotty Toddy cheer, who the hell thinks this "Toddy" guy's a "hotty"? Does that have something to do with Ole Piss fraternity hazing?? And the "gosh amighty" and "who the hell are we" parts sound like an 8-year-old trying out his first cuss words.

10) Ole Wish fans think it's the 1850s. While the administration has disavowed Dixie, the rebel flag, and Colonel Reb, the fans are still pitching a hissy fit over the loss of their Old South "traditions". I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Southerners taking pride in their heritage, but there are literally hundreds of Southern schools that don't feel the need to base their entire identity on the antebellum period. But I guess you can't blame them. If I lived in an armpit of a town like Oxford, and I went to a school whose athletic legacy was a century of futility, I'd pretend it was the ancient past too. The rest of us--who actually did something worth noting since the War Between the States--have moved on.

11) Hypersensitive fans. Before an LSU-Ole Miss game a few years ago, a bunch of Ole Miss fans started their inane chant, and I did my parody (Hotty Toddy Gosh Amighty, where did Ole Miss play? Flim flam bim bam BLUE GRAY by damn!) The Weeble fan sitting next to me immediately gave me a ticket for a seat five sections away, which I accepted since it was a better seat. Then, in the fourth quarter, I yelled "Eli Sucks" instead of "Kick their @$$" after a Tiger first down, and the Reb behind me kicked me in the back. Seriously, you go to the other team's stadium and you're shocked that the home crowd is heckling your team? Especially when you threw shoes at your own team after a loss? Wait, I guess Ole Wish fans don't know any other use for shoes.

12) Complete lack of imagination. "Go to Hell State"? "Go to Hell LSU"? How original. I guess they're rubber and we're glue.

13) Ole Mrs. suckdom isn't limited to football. The last time their baseball team won a game in Omaha, their star player was a third baseman named Archie Manning. Their men's basketball team has never won the conference. Not once in over 70 years. The funniest is women's basketball. Back when WBB was Tennessee and Latech and nothing else, they managed the most success in any sport since James Meredith by making the Elite Eight. Who led Ole Myth to this promised land? Van Chancellor, he of the four WNBA titles and two gold medals. He also managed to make a Final Four--in his first season as LSU's coach. But even he couldn't overcome the epic suck that is Oxfart.

14) As bad as they are in sports, they're even worse in the classroom. A 16 on the ACT gets you into Ole Miss. That's not a typo. SIXTEEN!! You need a 17 for NCAA eligibility. OK, you need a little more than a 16 to get into Ole Priss. You also need a 2.5 GPA.

15) The Walk of Champions? Must go to the visitors' locker room. Which of these does not belong: Alaska-Fairbanks, Baylor, Boise State, Bowling Green, CCNY, Eastern Kentucky, Furman, Holy Cross, James Madison, Michigan Tech, Minnesota-Duluth, Montana State, Northern Iowa, Ole Miss, Rice, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Temple, Tulane, Wayne State, or William & Mary? The answer: Ole Miss, because this is a list of teams that have won a Division I national championship in something.

Who I've personally always hated the most: Auburn
Who I currently hate the most since Saban: Alabama
LSU's biggest historical rival: probably Ole Miss

I don't like Arkanasas, but they aren't a rival. Its a forced, artificial rivalry created for the last weekend of the football season.

Thanks for your posts. I've been telling our students and young alums that Ole Miss loathes LSU much as you stated.

Now, for me my hatred goes
Gumps - loathe them with a passion, 24/7, 365.
Webels - hate them greatly but not as much as the gumps
Tulane - don't play them but I carry that hate in my heart for my Tiger family members that have passed away.

I'll just say this: You don't want to be LSU's rival.

First it was Tulane. Tulane used to be good - oh, about 80 years ago. They even went to the Rose Bowl one year. Then LSU destroyed their athletic program. Then it was Ol' Miss starting in about the 50's. For a while LSU and Ol' Miss were ranked in the top ten annually. Look up the stats, Ol' Miss had the best win% of ALL NCAA teams from 1950-1970 LINK. We destroyed their athletic program too. Now Arkansas is making noises about being our rival. We will destroy their athletic program shortly.

Basically it breaks down like this - LSU hates everybody and everybody hates LSU. Whoever we're playing next week - that's our rival.

ETA: That all said, we are extremely gracious to out of conference teams and fans. Ask around on the V-tech and WVU boards how their experiance in Baton Rouge was, I think they will confirm the hospitality.

And would have certainly claimed a NC for 1931 had they won it. Sort of like LSU in 1935 & 1936 with the Sugar Bowl.

It's weird. Back then bowl games were not supposed to count for determining the best team in the fall, and they didn't matter when there was a clear claim to a #1, but when there wasn't a clear claim, somehow they snuck into the process and mattered anyway.

Things got a lot better in 1950 when there were 2 national polls, and claims outside of those 2 polls got rarer, although some, such as Ole Miss's NC in 1960, were still legit.
