That's all great and all, but the product is being diminished either way. That's what I'm seeing and what I'm reacting too.

I agree.

The product we are seeing is not as good and that has nothing to do with the skill of the teams. It has everything to do with TV and money.

Wrong

The driving force is tv and tv dollars.

But what drives TV dollars? Isn't it commercials as a function of viewership, i.e., customers?

TV customers, yes. Customers at the games, no.

Maybe you know, I don't. But what percentage of our income comes from TV revenue vs season ticket sales, in stadium ads, etc. IOW, all non-TV revenue?

I agree with you that TV runs the game nowadays but I suspect LSU still gets a lot of revenue from other sources.

The waters get pretty muddy because of TAF’s role. But LSU’s athletic department has more revenue from ticket sales and contributions (which I believe include tradition fund etc.) than media rights. The media rights revenue will grow a lot with the new ESPN deal this year but it still won’t be larger than ticket sales + contributions.

ETA:
Last year, revenue from ticket sales + contributions was $109.8 million.
Revenue from media rights + bowl distributions + NCAA distributions was $55.7 million.

The ESPN deal will add something like $15 million in media rights.

the glaring issue here is that it was a verbal agreement. If it's not in writing, it's not enforceable. someone should have advised this kid properly before he transferred on a verbal agreement

telling them they can't play college ball if they don't accept the set rules as laid out.
Well we had that before the athletes and lawmakers decided it wasn’t good enough. They wanted the platform, exposure, training, coaching, and access to facilities provided by the NCAA but didn’t want to play by the NCAA’s rules. So instead of just saying frick the NCAA and going somewhere else we now have this shite show.

since the dawn of college sports these kids have been lied to about money(bag men)/playing time/positions/ etc etc to get them to commit to a school.

well... now that it is legal to pay them, welp no more lies. nut up or shut up.

My understanding is that the “contributions” figure includes both “donations” via the tradition fund and TAF transfers to the athletic department. Meaning most of it is likely an extension of ticket revenue.
