I knew a few Tulane fans growing up in metropolitan New Orleans, there were more than just a few blue-collar fans, then.
Tulane wasn't always awfully expensive, and there were always folks who could send their kids there, and many around the metropolitan area did embrace the Green Wave as their hometown team, the New Orleans vs. Baton Rouge thing is strong, and we all know us New Orleanians are a staunch, local bunch.
I'm a Tiger, through and through, and I hated Tulane with an irrational, immature hate for much of my life. But I must say, there is something missing from Louisiana college athletics when Tulane is down. I don't know what it is, but we have lost something as Tulane once again cycled down, and LSU has competed for BCS glory, and SEC glory.
TU should never have left the SEC, but they hire these idealistic intellectuals who actually believe a "big" university is better with de-emphasized sports. Ed Daniels writes about Tulane frequently in the Clarion Herald the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans and he never fails to take the TU administration, athletic department, and occasionally, even the coaches to task over their sorry athletic performance.
Yulman is a nice venue, played a high school playoff there this year (son's school) and it was nice, comfortable, fairly priced concessions.

Very good post. I would like to see Tulane upgrade their athletics and give LSU a run for their money, year to year. That was a fun rivalry. When my father would take me to LSU games as a child, I remember the absolute hatred in the stands between the two schools. The fistfights and all the fighting may not have been the prettiest thing, but the rivalry was. That's something that LSU truly doesn't really have anymore. Yeah, we have Bama (which is not really a rivalry if it's as one sided as it is). But with LSU and Tulane, we had the instate thing. And not just in Tiger Stadium every year. Travel there too. Home and home series, year to year.

The last game I went to with my grandfather was against Tulane in 2000 or 2001. He was 90 or so, and he sat there pretty quiet the whole game. We went ahead 47-17 at some point, and he jumps up and screams "go for 2."
It was a funny and sad and sweet moment.

Tulane will always have this.

but that fight with Tulane in Tiger Stadium in the south end zone was about as bad as it gets.
After the LSU/Tulane football game in 1938 fans, players, cheerleaders, and coaches went outside of Tiger Stadium and started beating each other with frozen sugar cane stalks; the area directly south of TS was a big cane field and was the source of the cane. The event is known in Tiger Lore as the "Great Tiger Rag."

That's awesome. I was mainly talking about on field fights. I was only 9 years old then though, so it's possible that I've built up in my head a little more than it was. I do remember players swinging their helmets as weapons and chaos on the field. It had been building up for a while. I kept telling my dad "they're gonna fight, they're fixing to fight." Of course, his drunken answer was "quiet son, I'm trying to watch the game."

I wish we played Tulane more often. It is the closest thing we have to a number 1 rival. Alabama has Auburn and Ole Miss has Miss. State. I hate Ole Miss, but I can't believe that LSU Ole Miss hatred on the field is as bad as Ole Miss Miss State. I don't believe that Ole Miss/LSU is on par with Michigan and Ohio State.
I remember the last games in the 90s at Tiger Stadium against Tulane. Maybe with the 9 games per conference we can schedule one rent a win that is always home, a good out of conference opponent and home and home with Tulane. With scheduling we can make it when we go to Tulane we have the rent a win and the out of conference at home.
Or since the SEC is the best conference I see no issue with two rent a wins at home every year with three non conference games at home when we have Tulane at home.
