It's not a stupid question. Les got lucky 2 season's ago. During the season and right before the bowl season. A lot of things happened to help him wint he N.C. If you can't admit that you're a fool.

He was on the hot seat last year, and a loss to Troy "might" have done him in.

One more year like that, he might be done. We'll see how much luck he has this year.

Yes, it is stupid. YOu can take just about any national title team and say "oh change these 2 or 3 plays and the outcome would be different"...

yeah, no shite. Winning a title in college football is fricking hard. Most teams play 2-3 close games in a season that could go either way.

So yeah, Les Miles got "lucky"...so did a bunch of other college coaches that won national titles.

its just a stupid fricking question. Sorry, but it is

Miles' luck could have been very different, but it wasn't. Results are measured...you cannot measure what "almost happened".

2005 Arizona State
2005 Florida
2005 Alabama
2006 Arkansas
2006 Tennessee
2007 Florida
2007 Auburn
2007 Tennessee (SEC...may be a moot point if we lose the previous 2)
2008 Auburn
2008 Troy

10 more losses on Miles's record and he'd be a lot more "DiNardoesque". If he goes 7-5 and 8-4 year after year...no, he wouldn't be here. No appearance in Atlanta in '05 and '07 means he would have been canned in '07, due to modern day LSU standards.

By the same token,

2005
* Had LSU hung on and beaten Tennessee in '05, we would have been in the Top 3 going into the SECCG, possibly playing for a berth in the NC Game.

2006
* Had we not literally gave away the Florida game and beaten ridiculously cheated in the Auburn game, we would have again been maybe #1 or #2 going into the SECCG.

2007
* Had we not blown a big lead at Kentucky and gave up a 4th and 10 in OT against Arkansas, we would have had a chance for a 14-0 season.

2008
* We clearly outplayed Alabama. We gave away that game too with the INT return for a TD and the blown 3rd down in Bama territory with a 14-7 lead, plus the horrible decision in OT.
* We had a 30-14 lead against Arkansas in the 4th quarter and LOST. Why? Because of two stupid unsportsnmanlike conduct penalties that kept TWO Arkansas drives alive.
* We could EASILY have been 10-3 in '08, even with out mediocre defense and co-coordinators and no Perrilloux.

This works for the Sabanistas,too.

What if in 2001 Auburn had beaten Alabama ? No SEC West title. What if Florida had beaten Tennessee in the 'postponed' game ? Doubtful we'd have beaten Florida in the SECCG. That SEC title in 2001 did a hell of a lot to solidify the program ,recruiting and fanbase. A ho-hum 8-3 and Cotton Bowl or Outback would not have.

What if we don't make the Bluegrass Miracle in 2002 ? What if Ole Miss hadn't turned the ball over inside our redzone in 2002 already up 13-7 ? We were "that" close to 6-6 in 2002.

i don't think the defense would have been mediocre with RP moving the score up on the home side. U know the the guy Les would have not thrown out with the bath water, in the off season, if Les would have lost 4 games
