The drafting of underclassman is a symptom of that.

What are the rules on redshirting? I know I've always heard that you can play a certain amount of games or plays and as long as you don't exceed that number, you can still redshirt.

A few years back I looked up the rules, and from what I remember, the only type of redshirt is a medical redshirt. The NCAA doesn't strictly enforce proving a player has an injury if they don't step on the field at all in a season. I believe Div I rule is 20% of the season

Oops. Yeah, wasn't paying close enough attention to what I was saying there. ETA: Can't wait for everyone to pile on that mistake.

Still, I'd like to have Mett back.

Amazing this question still gets asked.

If you play at all...no redshirt. That means if you went in for one PAT against Sam Houston and that was it for the season...you lost a year.

...unless...

I believe there is a rule regarding Medical redshirts involving players who play below a certain % of snaps in the beginning of the year that allows these Medical Redshirts to be processed more quickly and are basically rubber stamped. This is what Loston got...several others.

Burning the redshirts of Williams, Chark, Battle, Voorhies, Alexander, Teuhema and Gage is idiotic.

No its not!! However that will be answered better as the season progresses and how much actual playing time your list of players gets, and how they contribute.

Why it is a good idea to burn the shirt-its obvious, they are talented and default answer is play 3 years instead of RS then play 2 before leaving school.

I say play them let them get experience and we have the best depth of anybody we face and that is the edge in the 4th quarter for big games, AND if we play 15-20 freshmen that is a heck of a recruiting tool !!!!

Gage played in the 4th on a blow out game. Not sure why a redshirt is blown on him. Do you really think he is 3 years and out with Tolliever and Lewis coming next year?

maybe coach miles just wanted to get some guys some pt who may not get any when we get into the think of the schedule

If you are good enough to play at LSU as a freshman and start as a sophomore and JR year, odds are you will be drafted.

Travin Dural is a decent example of this, he is a draft eligible Sophomore this season...and, well, we'll be lucky to hold onto him if he continues to play like he has. I will say I m 90% certain he only red shirted his freshman year because he was hurt I believe.
I was telling my wife the exact same thing about Dural. NFL scouts love a guy who can take the top off of a defense. I was saying I hope he returns next season so he can work on refining the other routes

Almost all of those will play 4 years and will give us experience deep on our bench for years to come. Its the opposite of idiotic with the way we are recruiting these days.

Nobody redshirts at lsu.. i dont think it's because they are ALL really good. I personally think it's a great recruiting tool.

Burning redshirts against a DII school gives some players false hope but other desire to player harder.. so to me it doesnt matter.

I wouldnt want my son to burn his redshirt and only get PT in a couple games

For example, Craig Loston was promised to start his first game at LSU. He started on special teams against Washington, then redshirted that season.

He had a legitimate injury also.

I agree but it doesn't pay to redshirt guys when they leave after 3 years no matter what

When we have been on the field chasing down the Ags, Ole Miss, AU, or in a grinder against Bama...we will be glad these freshmen got some action and some film.

Nothing beats fresh bodies to keep a defense effective. Guys must be given time on the field. There are other intangibles, like team unity and practice effectiveness that are delivered by all players being engaged. I love seeing them go out there....and I will love seeing Garrett next week.

so my question to you is.. Do you really think the entire 2014 will leave after 3 years? and if so do you think the entire 2014 will be drafted into the nfl?

of course not, but does a reasonable person think that with Paris on board, Toliver coming and Robinson and White sophmores, that a fifth year for Gage would make him a starting CB? It is better to bring him in in packages and to do that his highest and best use is achieved from getting him playing time early and often.

yes. I'm not trying to single any one kid out. Just making a point at not all of these kids are 3 years and out. some/most won't go pro so staying 4 years and trying to get your degree may be more important to some
