From the stands, I didn't see any fair catch signal from Trindon. It looked like he was signaling to stay away from the ball, then changed his mind and picked it up...

Was that a blown call by the refs, or did he really make a fair catch signal?

It was the right call. A player is not allowed to make any hand gestures then run with the ball.

It wasn't the fair catch signal. He waived his teammates away from the ball. Apparently that signal, per the rule, precluded him from touching the ball. The call was correct.

According to Gary, it was the right call. He made an "incomplete pass" signal, waving his arms left and right as the chest-high level, meaning to tell his players to get away from the ball. Verne and Gary said that this is a new rule in college football that you can't advance a punt after making that signal

You sure about that chief? Cause returners wave their arms to tell their teammates to stay away from the ball.

Also, remember that UCONN returner last year did the fake fair catch? Cause i do

not really

the signals are the same thing. they both signify that you're not going to return the ball

Miles said in his press conference that Holiday was calling off his players and the refs thought he was making an illegal hand motion as he was playing the ball. He said that rule is one of those "iffy" rules in the rulebook

waving off your teammates is an illegal (actually "invalid") hand motion

Had he not picked up the ball isn't it still live though? Ole Miss still has to touch the ball to stop play? Why isn't the returner still able to touch the ball and advance it?

for LSU, it's dead

It was a make up call for when the refs called a foul on the Ole Miss fair catch.

Exactly on

The rule is dumb, but its not like its first rule in CFB to need tweaking ...
But it wasn't the fair catch signal that is waving one hand, usually the right, from side to side in the air, over one's head. Trindon waved both his hands toward the ground, like an incomplete pass or a runner is safe, that is used by teams to signal to other members that he isnt planning to run the ball back so no worries. I kinda missed exactly what happened being in the Student Section and all, but I'm guessing TH saw something and the ball took a perfect bounce. So basically good call, crappy rule

One aspect of the play that I haven't heard discussed is that the ball bounced.

I always thought that once the ball bounced that a fair catch was not possible and that the ball could be advanced. I'm not sure about that but I've always thought that.

Well at least the NFL knows how to crown a champion. College football still hasn't figured that out.
