Freshman of the Week: Tre' Morgan, LSU

LSU's Tre' Morgan helped lead the Tigers to three wins in four games last week, including an SEC series victory at Auburn. Morgan, the Tigers' lead-off hitter, batted .529 (9-for-17) in four games with one double, one triple, one homer, three RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases and a .556 on-base percentage. In LSU's series win at Auburn, Morgan hit .538 (7-for-13) with one triple, one homer, three RBI, four runs, one stolen base and a .571 on-base percentage. His two-out, two-run triple in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday night at Auburn extended LSU's from 5-3 to 7-3 in an eventual 8-3 win.

Also collects the 4th Freshman of the Week award for LSU. Crews (1), Thompson (2), and Morgan (1).

And the write up doesn’t even mention his prowess on defense.

I was going to question who they picked for POTW. Glad I clicked the link.

Well deserved.

The young positional talent on this team is first rate.

The pitching...worries me.

Don’t say that because some on here continuously bash his first baseman skills and think he should be in the outfield regardless of what the announcers, Paul and others have stated multiple times publicly.

Huh?

Tre is fricking awesome first baseman, but the only reason he is there is because he's a lefty and can't play short or third. His glove is that good though.

He won't be a first baseman at the next level because he's not that tall and not a power hitter. Would not shock me at all if he moves to the outfield at some point because of that.

I see absolutely no reason to move him. He is arguably the best defensive first baseman in all of college baseball.

Google him on here. There are these “purist” that think Todd Walker and David Delucci are full of shite as well as Paul and all of the highlights. Say he over-does it and stretches when he shouldn’t. Don’t let the ball travel. And my favorite, “has bad footwork” around the base which puts him in a bad position. Where their sorry peewee asses have never played even JV baseball and if they are lucky enough played JV and thought this travel ball was really a “step up”. Hey ignorant generation of participation trophy kids, YOU’RE ON TRAVEL BALL BECAUSE YOUR PARENTS PAY THE COACHES TO TAKE YOU.

I’ve seen some hilarious shite in my time and these idiots take the cake on comments about Morgan.

To be fair, one guy who posts that all the time is saying it mostly because he thinks Hellmers is better and desperately wants him there instead of Morgan.

There’s been others that have supported him. Hellmers would be there if A. He could hit better than Beloso or Bianco or name any of them hitting around the Mendoza Line or B. He was a better option at first to the point that Morgan to OF is for the betterment of the team - See A.

All of this is true at times. He’s not the most technically sound first baseman. And that’s ok. He’s still a freshman. Like I’ve said before you can teach technique you can’t teach the freakishly athletic things he’s able to pull off now.

I’ve said multiple times that he’s not a technically sound first baseman. I’ve never said he’s not a good first baseman though.

yuli is not a technically sound first baseman in your opinion. Maybe Bagwell would have been a decent one. Wait Bill Buckner wasn’t one either. People remember what they want and see what they want. In my MANY MANY years of playing and impinge games, this kid as as good as I’ve seen at the high school and college level. His ability to pick is remarkable. Period

For college is a ++ fielding first baseman and all around +++ players.

I agree. Now think of how much better he can get by being just a little more efficient on defense. You’re arguing like I said the kid was dogshit or something. I didn’t. He’s absolutely brilliant and still has a lot he can improve on. I don’t know why pointing that out pisses you off so much. You should be excited about the prospect of it.
