Does Steele like bigger LBs or is that Saban's thing?

Honestly I don't think there will be a drop off at all. I think we will have a more aggressive defense.

I don't know why Chavis was put on some kind of pedestal like he's an elite DC. Outside of 2011, I have found myself in big games more frustrated with the defense than not.

This pretty much sums it up for me also. Too many 3rd and Chavis moments cost LSU some very close games. Now he can bring that gift to the aTms.

I agree with the last two posts. But, besides Chavis/Steele comparisons, I'm more exited about the Haley/O differences. My money is on O making a big difference in our DL.

As far as recruiting, which makes good coaches even better, it's a no brainier. SteeleO

I really wish ppl would be more specific instead of using rant cliches. Although I do agree that Chavis had some defensive breakdowns in the past few years. Our prevent defense got shite on late in games.

Hanagriff was talking about this today. We'll probably be more multiple than ever. You might see some 3 fronts but you won't see 4 LBs on the field at one time. You'll probably see an extra Safety or maybe even drop another DE back but you won't see at true 3-4 look. We simply don't have the personnel for that.

I disagree somewhat. Beckwith and Garrett would be nice on inside. Valentine at nose. I agree we don't have the depth to do it all the time, I think we see it more than you think.

Do we have some DEs that could shift back and play olb? Yeah probably. Do we have some big DTs that could shift over and be a NT or a DE? Probably.

But they weren't recruited for that and have never played that way, hence us not having the personnel.

We could try and shift everyone around and make a 3-4 but it would lead to A LOT of growing pains

looks like it was more of Saban's thing. at least the Bama version of Saban, LSU had some smaller LBs/ converted safeties under Saban (think Mayes and Eric Alexander).

looking at some old CFN Clemson previews, Steele ran a 4-3 with LBs that are comparable in size to what Chavis used.

LINK (he was there from 09-11 if you wanna view previous yrs).

I've heard it said that Steele will run more complicated schemes than Chavis. Okay, but … what does this mean precisely? The last time i heard "complicated" in the same sentence as "DC" was in the Lou Tepper days. I don't care what Steele does as long as it doesn't lead to Tepper results!

I agree as well, I think Beckwith and Garrett in the middle would be difficult to run on.. Valentine could prob hold down the nose...then the possibilities are endless with what to do with extra LB's and DE's...just a matchup game after that...I do like the bulk in the middle though...

no one knows just yet. we're still gonna be base 4-3, but have some multiple fronts. sounds like Chavis so far to me, but maybe we'll do something closer to the 3-4. Lamar Louis sure seemed to say that we would show some 3-4 looks in an ESPN blog.

actually, Tepper was supposed to be less complicated than Carl Reese (and IMO he was). Reese would throw in new "wrinkles" weekly it seemed. everyone loved him when they worked (see the UF upset) but he was doing too much/ players were confused when it didn't.

I would happy if:

The defense takes a slight step back BUT does not choke late in games.

I'm glad Chavis left! I never liked him, or his stupid mustang package, and the fact that he played a high school player at best at starting Middle linebacker for two years and we got torched up the middle.

Keep in mind, Steele did time under his former master ..... er ....."Lord Saban". I am sure he learned a few things from the man. I really don't think he will do any worse than Chavis, and actually think that in time he will do better. He needs to get his type of talent in here, but until then, I am thinking that between him and his staff, they will make good use of the current talent.

Chavis had his problems but his defenses were basically always in the top two in the SEC and top 20 in the nation, which is as good as anyone in the nation outside of Saban. The idea that a dude with a resume like Steele is going to be an upgrade over one of they very best DCs in the nation is dumb as hell. Steele is a good recruiter, but all the talent in the world won't matter if the coaching isn't there. He'll probably do okay, but the defense is going to drop off.

Maybe Chavis is a top DC, but not in the last two minutes of halves or on third downs. Those Achilles heels cost us often. I for one am glad to see that part gone. Looking forward to what this crew will do, and I feel Steele will have something to prove to a lot of people.

I don't mean to disrespect Steele but after the last two seasons I think O's sideline intensity might be as important as his recruiting.
