I can't stand that piped in junk. You kids need to learn to appreciate what you have in a great college band playing timeless songs about your school and teams. If it takes that piped in music to get you ready to play or watch a game you aren't an athlete or true fan anyway. Just stick your ipod in your ear and pipe in all the music you want. I'll take the live college band any day.
17-22 year old kids of today NEED some kind of outside stimulation to get pumped up for ANYTHING. They don't have enough inside themselves to get by without it. Weak.
BTW, all the "Recorded" music in TS is here to stay unless the athletic department is bombarded with complaints from enough people that don't like it.

Agreed. The piped in music is fake, artificial, and cheesy. If I want to listen to AC/DC, or hip hop, I'll listen to the radio or iTunes. When I go to a football game, I want football, crowd noise, and the LSU band. I don't need flashing lights, loud music, and other cheesy frills and gimmicks to get excited about being in Tiger Stadium.

Before anyone starts judging SC just know that are band is terrible. Most SEC bands blow them away in our own stadium and they've been out-done by bands that are even smaller than they are. Luckily after large amounts of complaints to the President we have a new band director who turned our ASU's band or something. So hopefully our band we'll get as large as it used to be and be a respectable SEC band.
I love band music, its a part of what makes college football great, but that doesn't mean some piped in music can't get the crowd rocking.
Watch this video.. I guarantee you if our band was playing this the crowd wouldn't be as "pumped up" Hell we've even started to personalize it with the rooster crow when the song dies down to get everyone going again + the "USC USC USC" chants.
LINK
ETA: Not sure if LSU's band is the same way, but outside of the pre-game songs, or defensive / scoring cheers.. anytime our band gets a chance to play music they play Lady GaGa, or AC/DC, or Alice Cooper etc. Essentially the same songs that people are saying they don't want to hear piped in on this board.

There is nothing wrong with piped in music AT TIMES in tiger stadium. As long its not overkill and the tiger band doesnt change anything that they do. One example is sometimes during long commercial breaks the stadium can get quiet at times with people just waiting for the teams to go on the field and I think the piped in music helps get people pumped up. I dont understand why you cant have both. They do need to fix the speaker system though. It is horrible and I think people would appreciate the piped in music more if it just sounded better.

My e-mail to Herb Vincent in 9/09:
Mr. Vincent,
Thanks for all you do for LSU. I saw my first game in Tiger Stadium (TS) in 1970 (vs. Texas A&M; 20-18 loss). But as an 8 year old kid I still have fond memories of that time in TS. I finished at LSU in 12/85 (B.S. ChE). I say that because I have had a love for LSU and an appreciation for the TS atmosphere since my childhood. Tiger Stadium on Saturday night is still the envy of the college football world. And I was just as excited to be back in TS this past Saturday night as I was as an 8 year old kid.
With that in mind I asked you to consider discontinuing the use of piped-in music in TS. I’ll state my reasons as succinctly as possible:
1) IMO, piped-in music has an artificial feel to it that’s foreign to all things TS. TS stands for the best of college football traditions. Does piped-in music really fit in TS?
2) Piped-in music stifles the introduction of new in-game traditions. I realize with TV games, there will be several prolonged breaks in the game. As long as many of these breaks are filled with piped-in music, it is unlikely that any new cheer, song, or crowd led tradition will develop.
3) Piped-in music can be replicated in any venue. The best and uniqueness of TS is not easily replicated anywhere. When we resort to piped-in music we are not elevating the TS atmosphere. Rather, we are lowering ourselves to the level of lesser venues.
4) I’d much prefer that we encourage more of the best things of TS (crowd noise, cheers, the Golden Band from Tigerland (TGBFTL)) to introducing the common things of lesser atmospheres.
5) Consider in ’03 after Georgia scored a 4th Quarter TD to tie the game. After that score TS erupted into an LSU, LSU, LSU . . . cheer. Had piped-in music been played, one of the greatest moments in TS history would have never have happened. Mark Richt, Georgia’s coach, described it afterwards: "All I began to hear was a chant: L-S-U. L-S-U. It got louder and louder and louder and it was the loudest I'd ever heard a stadium” link (Maybe we could bronze Richt’s comments on this at TS somewhere?) Never would’ve happened had piped-in music been played.
6) Piped-in music can distract the crowd away from the game. During the 1st quarter of this past week’s game versus Vandy, Vandy had the ball and a time-out was called. During the time-out piped-in music began and continued until a second or so after the play clock was re-started. Until then, the crowd was fairly loud and raucous. Unfortunately, we (the crowd) were waiting for the music to stop to resume that patented TS roar. But the music continued too long and the play was run before the crowd could get back into it.
7) We have the best band in college football and they’re not a one-trick pony (like Tenn and “Rocky Top”). I can turn on a radio 24 hours of any day and hear the songs that are piped-into TS. But only on a few weekends of the year do we get to the opportunity to hear the TGBFTL. In this regard, I would almost beg you to ensure that piped-in music never, ever preempts TGBFTL. While it’s probably the case that the band and piped-in music do not compete for air time, I can recall at least one occasion last year when the piped-in music preempted the band.
I’m sure every decision affecting the game day atmosphere is weighed carefully by you and your staff. I trust that a fan’s displeasure with the piped-in music will be given due consideration.
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
His reply:
Thank you for your email. The pre-recorded music is meant to supplement the band, not to replace it. It is never intended to play over the band, though we had one miscommunication last week when the band played and the pre-recorded music started. The band always has priority. However there are times in the game when the band does not play and the music is intended to fill that time. As you said in your email, with new television agreements, breaks can be very long and dead-time can be prolonged. The big games like Florida and Alabama – and the Georgia game that you mentioned – carry themselves as far as atmosphere. But there are a number of times during games when pre-recorded music can add to the event, such as last week when Jump Around was played and the student section got very involved in the song.
Your email will be forwarded to our marketing department so they are aware of these very reasonable concerns. We will continue to play pre-recorded music but will be careful to play the appropriate amount at the appropriate times.
Thank you for taking the time to write.

I'm ok with piped in music as long as it is appropriate for a sporting event. Last year during a timeout, someone thought that 92,000 LSU fans wanted to hear Justin Bieber. That is unacceptable at an LSU football game.

Piped in music gets the students more pumped up.
The atmosphere for the LSU/Auburn game in Auburn last year was better than the atmosphere at any LSU game in the last 2 years.

As a 20 year old sophomore, of course I enjoy a limited amount of piped in music. But I've been going to tigah games my whole life, and it seems to me that in pre-game theres a good mix between the band music and piped in music. The students still go crazy when the band plays the classics. Even the players dance around and get pumped when they pipe in Callin Baton Rouge. It pains me that people here say that the TS spirit is dead. One of the moments that stands out to me is when Geno Smith from WVU got rocked on a QB draw, and then on third down was so rattled by the noise that he lined up under the guard instead of the center. Dont claim that TS is dead. Stop complaining. Enjoy what it still the best college atmosphere around.

It may not be "dead", but it is not as rowdy as it used to be, young grasshopper. There is a thread about the Earthquake game being replayed on TV tonight. I was at that game (student at the time) and have been at almost every one since, and trust me, Tiger Stadium was a rowdier place 20 years ago. Winning 2 titles has spoiled the new fanbase and the CEO's who have all the seats now have replaced the hard core rabid fans. All the games are on TV, so being "in the stadium" isn't as big a deal as it used to be. Times have changed.

I agree with this. It occasionally reaches it's former glory but not consistently. The fanbase changed in '03.

I agree with everything you wrote - hit the nail on the head.
At one time, the people to the left and right of me were the same group, week to week.
For the last five years, it has been a different group every game because some company owns 4 seats to the right of me and 4 seats to the left of me and sells them for every game.
