Great passer doesn’t = great QB. Russell had brilliant moments but was inconsistent & prone to mistakes.

Flynn is inarguably a less gifted athlete, but he played his role well.

ETA: Russell relied excessively on arm talent.

No offense, but seriously? Wickersham above Hodson?

Russell was undoubtedly a better pure passer. And Flynn undoubtedly played on a better team.

I still think Flynn had something intangible but maybe that confidence comes from playing on a better team... he looked great in relief at Green Bay too though.

He was in the 70s, but was way better than all of them. The only guy who could eclipse him would be Burrow.

uhh, ok. since Russell wasn't a great QB, and Flynn was like the polar opposite, what made Flynn a great QB?

I could say this about Flynn as well, and maybe even moreso on the mistake-prone part.

lesser arm talent for sure, I wouldn't sell him so short on the overall athleticism. Flynn was pretty mobile.

but he played his role well.

what role was that? how was it played better than Jamarcus?

Russell relied excessively on arm talent.

how?

In 2006, Russell had to play Florida and Auburn on the road

In 2007, Flynn played them at home.

That’s the difference.

These are good questions. Jamarcus was fun to watch & one of the most freakish athletes to ever wear an LSU jersey.

He (Flynn) was a system QB & more of a threat with his feet.

They played one year apart & both had pretty solid teams around them.

If Jamarcus gets another year do you get the same results in 07? Hard to say. I think ppl forget how important Flynn’s mobility was in that offense.

As a pure arm talent it’s not even a discussion Jamarcus obviously wins. And yes he’s more efficient on the stat sheet.

Flynn deserves some credit for what he did with the 07 team though. Still wish we’d retained Perriloux :(

You are all over the place with this post. On one hand you say that Jamarcus was a system QB , but you also say he had the better pure arm talent. Conflicting statements.

Then you say Jamarcus was more of a threat on his feet. You also say mention how important Flynn’s mobility was in the 2007 offense. Wouldn’t that make Jamarcus the better option?

Jamarcus Russell (best arm I have ever seen in person)
Matt Flynn
Zach Mettenberger (any defense in 2013 and we would have been filthy)

Zach Mettenberger just stands out to me as one of my favorite Tigers in recent years. I don’t know why I just liked those years he was here even though we had no defense.

Pronouns man. Guy I was answering asked in what way Flynn played his role better.

FLYNN was a system QB and better on his feet lol. Ppl underestimate how important his mobility was to that (2007) offense.

I thought context would have made that obvious, but I edited it for clarity.

easy now. Burrow's very good, but JaMarcus Russell was an exceptional college QB. It's going to take a lot from Burrow this year to jump over Russell and Hodson.
