I think people are listing Hawpe based on what he's doing NOW. He's not in my top 20. Great player...but get in line.

My father saw Alvin Dark play footbal and baseball at LSU, and called him the most underrated player in LSU football history.

Yes he did here.

No he didn't. Its Russ Springer. He and Big Ben hit campus at the same time, 1987, and went pro the same year, 1989.

For his three year career at LSU, Big Ben threw 308 innings and struck out 373 batters. Springer threw 252 innings and struck out 313 batters.

He pitched the 1989 win against Miami win in Omaha. And, I believe his name is up there on some strike out records at LSU.

Not to take a single thing away from Ben, but Springer was a vital part of that staff over those three years and his name is never offered up.

Maybe this is a point for a "TOP 5 Pitchers" thread and not a "Top 5 Players" thread.

Kind of suprised Theriot hit this list. Really good player in college, but wouldn't consider him a Top 5 player if we are just using their LSU career as a mark. If you are throwing in what they did after LSU, then he is up there.

Yep, Russ Springer was a great pitcher. He shut down a very hot Miami team in the CWS in '89 - same team that rocked McDonald 4 days earlier.

Don't forget Curt Leskanic on the 89 team. He was solid as well.

Yep, and his name never surfaces in any LSU Baseball Great thread. The most interesting thing about Russell, he could care less.

Never seen a more competitive person that was as apathetic about he is about his status.

Dude, Big Ben was downright terrible in postseason.

um, 1989 Texas A&M Regional on line 1. LSU doesn't sniff Omaha in 1989 without Big Ben.

Maybe this thread needs to expand itself to say eight (position) players and 2 to 3 pitchers.

IMO, just because a player wasn't on a NC team shouldn't disqualify them from an "all-time" list. Our baseball program began to take flight in the mid-80's. Some of those players in the mid-80's (Belle) and late-80's (McDonald) were instrumental in our long-term success.
