Tommy Casanova Game Used LSU Helmet

Since I posted about acquiring a #18 jersey, I figured I'd post another story for anyone winding down this midweek holiday.
I was able to add this to my collection not too long ago; Tommy Casanova's game used LSU helmet. I acquired it from the owners of a small restaurant that had it sitting on the top of a shelf in a corner. It was once owned by Billy Cannon, who had acquired it decades ago either from the LSU athletic dept while Casanova was playing at LSU, or from Casanova himself while he was playing at LSU. Cannon gave it to the restaurant owners, as he had been to their restaurant and became friends with the owners, and wanted them to have it on display with their other memorabilia. The owners have dozens of game used helmets on display, all of which have been given to them by former players and coaches (different colleges and pro teams).
It is sadly missing its face mask, which I have decided not to replace with a replica. The helmets rarity, though, makes this an afterthought. The padding has become detached as the glue had dried up, however it is present with the helmet and I will eventually have it professionally reattached.
After I acquired it, I set out to attempt to photo-match it, however I knew my chances would be slim as the videos of games are not of good quality, and there are only so many photos to be found. I started searching the internet in every conceivable location, and then began looking through my collection of programs, media guides and wire photos. Then I found my helmet in an article about the equipment staff's preparation for away games in a 1971 LSU vs Florida program. It is a perfect match. I honestly couldn't believe that I was able to photo match it. I hope you enjoy, and Happy 4th

I always like to throw in my little bit on this subject. I have an AJ Dewey practice jersey. Not as sweet as a game used helmet, but it ain't bad either.
Eta: Showing my age. The man's name is spelled Duhe apparently. Funny no one mentioned that before.
Dad gave it to me when I was very young. I don't remember seeing him play.

For the youngsters on here, the equipment "supervisor" in the picture, "Jimmy" Smith was also the baseball coach.
Talk about tough making it to Omaha in those days.

Wish LSU would spice up the spring game with Throw-Back uniforms like this versus something futurist, use your imagination. I realize their uniforms aren’t much different but there are some subtle differences and not-so-subtle Numbered helmets.

Always liked Steve Rehage growing up.
Not saying he belongs on that list, just liked to watch him play.

That's a nice piece. Post a photo if you can.

Yessir. The man was all Lsu all the time. Won an SEC championship as the baseball coach while as the full time equipment "supervisor".
EDIT: correction, I confused Ray Didier and Jimmy Smith as to the freshman football coach for the late 50s and early 60s. Momentary lapse.
