Pitching is much more situational now. You don’t need a true closer. It’s all about matchups and you may need your “closer” in the 5th inning to shut down a rally.

because he showed command of 5 plus pitches.
We have very different definitions of plus pitches.

Regardless, he was never going to be the closer.

He’s a rubber arm that can give you volume. And his best effect last year was clearly coming after lineups had seen power arms for a few ABs and then had to figure out his change-up.

I would about guarantee he won’t be in a single-inning closing role again this season, especially in a high-leverage or conference game

He had the 2nd most saves on a national championship team last year. You may very well be correct, but a guarantee at this point is retarded. He will def be in high leverage situations this year.

just shows you know nothing about Jay Johnson, if a certain team that struggles with certain pitches or a matchup in the certain part of a lineup, he’ll be back out there.

to correct my take to broski in the game thread I think he was forced to close out games because of the injuries we had to Sheerin and Guidry. I don’t think this year he’s going to be “THE” guy, I think he’ll be used in certain matchups depending where the lineup is during the 8-9 inning or if a team have proven to be terrible at off speeds. I think eventually someone like Rizy, Sheerin or Fontenot will take over that role because they are power arms. Guys like Cowan and Guidry look like perfect setup men. Going to be a fun ride no matter what, a lot of good arms on this team.

No Kidding man. It’s sounds like nobody even watched the game yesterday. His decision to spend the last two off-seasons. They’ve help him tighten up his pitches and added a cutter. You could see that yesterday in the command he had in his change up and slider which he’s never had confidence throwing in certain situations. Now that he is finally 100% healthy since his back injury in HS he could have a huge season.

Just getting back on the mound was a big step, but even watching him throw and seeing how much better he looked. I didn’t know he would look like that. But it doesn’t surprise me… he lives for those moments and loves the pressure. I’m happy for him.

The closer threw last night. And he is coming off an arm injury so he won't throw back to back nights on game 2 of the season.

He struck out 5/6 batters he faced.

We are doomed because we should win every game by at least 20 runs.

Being a closer has nothing to do with how hard you can throw. Can you throw strikes with good location and get outs at the end of a game in pressure situations is all you need.

Guidry will be one of the guys in a “closer” role, he will also be a set up guy.

His injury was to his back not arm
