If I remember correctly, we interviewed him when Laval was out, but Skip thought he was “too arrogant” in the interview?

He has rules that allowed him for years to give all those scholarships. Now with the changes where you can have more than one scholarship, he may leave Vandy for more money. Otherwise, why ever leave.

I call BS on whoever started that rumor. It's a smokescreen to cover up the fact that Bertman was only going to hire Mainierie. He knew the old man forever, was going to give his son the job and set him up for life.

I saw someone mention that they other day (something with Vandy and scholarships) can you explain that? they get more scholarship slots than others? Or they have in the past or something?

This is not the case. It was pretty public that Bertman was turned down by a few guys before Mainieri’s name even came up.

There was a rumor that Jim Wells was gonna be the next HC but Corbin was the first guy to interview and sounded like a great fit. Pawlowski was next and Mainieri's name came up later.

I met Charlie Babineaux at the 2010 LSU/Ole Miss football game and we talked about Bianco not taking the job. Babineaux said that at Bianco wanted the job, but it was not the time because he would still be under Bertman’s shadow.

Why do so many people have to be so extreme one way or another?

Why can't LSU potentially get a top guy to come to a prestige baseball school?

I doubt seriously Vandy or UF coach would come to LSU, but I could still a guy like the Louisville coach possibly being intrigued to come to a school like LSU.

I think it's wrong when people say things like no way would Texas Tech coach leave his alma mater. Perhaps it's unlikely, but I could still see potentially leaving for the opportunity to coach at an LSU.

You still reach out and make top guys say no before moving on down your list. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I also don't see anything wrong with recognizing LSU is a desirable and well respected baseball program.

Same number of slots as anyone else. Vandy offers financial aid through its Opportunity Vanderbilt program in the form of grants. If you can’t afford part or all of tuition, you get a grant, which doesn’t count against the baseball scholarships. It’s similar to how LSU is treated with TOPS.

Rather than look at Corbin, the guy who makes sense in Corbin's coaching tree is Derek Johnson, who was his pitching coach from 2002-12.

He put six pitchers into the first round of the draft in that time period.

Now he's the Reds' pitching coach and he's considered the top assistant in MLB.

Johnson is the kind of hire a Bob Brodhead would make. He wouldn't break the bank but you literally can't get a better baseball man.

they are not a public university so they don’t have the same disclosures as public. With that TCUs Schlossenagle may now leave since the NCAA said you can combine an athletic scholarship for certain sports like baseball and academics.

That’s why you hardly ever saw coaches at TCU, DBU, Vandy, Tulane even leave.
