As a white guy who plays a little basketball, let me chime in (late) and say that basketball is just not as popular in Louisiana. End of story. Race hsa nothing to do with it. Hell, even Southern University fields better baseball and football teams than their basketball team. That's just the way it is.
Let's look at places where basketball is very popular, like Duke and Connecticut. Don't tell me the popularity of the game there has anything to do with race.

Maybe it was the year he spent at NLU?

have you ever looked around tiger stadium and noticed there are basically no black people in the stands ?? same with the PMAC ... i have always wondered why this was ... you just don't see a whole lot of african americans at LSU sporting events ..

Look around most major college stadiums. I dont know any percentages but I would be willing to bet that there is a pretty small crowd of Black people at most of them (based off of games I've seen on TV & personal attendance).Same for most basketball Arenas.

I have been going to LSU watch parties for the last ten years in Pensacola (not the most progressive part of the US) and I have NEVER heard the "N" word at any of our many functions throughout the year. We bleed purple & gold no matter what the sport. If you don't bleed purple & gold, I would suggest you find another school to support. WE DON'T NEED OR WANT YOU!

I love LSU and cant wait to attend the fall semester. I'm black and I support all LSU functions. When ever a LSU team comes to Phoenix I would go and support no matter what sport it may be!

For whatever reason Brando has always had a burr in his saddle RE: SEC basketball's fan base support being weak outside of Kentucky.
He brings it up all the time and I find him manner somewhat arrogant and condescending, especially on his radio show and that comes out in spades when he gets on this...one of his favorite topics.
It is what it is Tim. I've heard enough backroom discussions on the subject to know that there is definitely some of what Brando alludes to...to deny that one must have their head in the sand.
But racist is a strong word and one overused IMHO. For someone of his noteriety to say such a thing is irresponsible and foolish...but not surprising.

You are correct about Brando being arrogant and condescending. I find it funny that his column in the Shreveport Times today talked about apathy towards the LSU BB program in one sentence and talked about how LSU fan base thought that LSU would be the surprise team of the NCAA Tourney in the next. It's got to be one way or the other not both...No where in his column did he mention any of the crap of racism he spews on the radio. That wouldn't go over to well in the home town newspaper...He is nothing but a shock jock and I will be willing to bet that on his show next week he will bring up how the LSU "Homer Boards" are going crazy over his view...Oh and if you were wondering that is a toupee he is wearing...

quote:I paid particular attention to this while watching the game tonight vs Ole Miss,, i counted 9 blacks in attendance from what i saw of the crowd shots during the game,, 4 were in the student section sitting together,,(one in a aka sweat, thanks for going guys). Thats fine, people spend there money and time where they see fit! It is their perogative, however TIm LSU fans are no more or less predudice than any other fans!.. At least we have African American students which is more than you can say for Duke, Notre Dame ,University of Miami!! I support and love LSU athletics whether it is Basketball , BB, Football, baseball, track , womens bb, softball, or womens midget tiddly winks! All I see is different shades of PURPLE!!! Thanks to all the athletes for giving me many years of pride and enjoyment!!!

Thank you . . . and I am being kind towards Tim Brando, because, normally, when some cocksucker utters a negative word towards LSU, I want to cut his friggin head off.

WHAT???
They could be all white with Irish last names and it wouldn't make me go to the game any more than now. I'm just not a very big basketball fan, and I know I am far from being the only one. That's ridiculous, and you know what, it's VERY insulting. Screw Tim Brando.
