Why do people think you have to throw the ball 50 times a game to have a successful offense?

BTW: What has been the recipe for winning NC's since 2006? Play defense, power running game, and good special teams..

I've said two things all along:

1) Mettenberger should have started the 2nd half against Alabama in New Orleans. We had nothing to lose, even viewed from the perspective of that moment. It's the one thing Alabama wasn't expecting--like the option in the first game.

2) If Mettenberger is even a little better than JJ or JL then no one--no one--will be able to stop our offense. And I'm saying that directly to the people in Tuscaloosa.

The same folks that think you have to throw it in games to improve. Like somehow UW or NT are a tougher test than our D in practice.

Here's AJ McCarron's stats in the national championship game. 23-of-34 for 234

Would you rather win or lose that game this year?

I always figured you take what the defense gives you. they stack the box to prevent the run and you chunk it downfield. they drop back to protect against the pass and you run it down their throat. We kind of did that in the first half. Second half we ran it down their throats and they stacked the box but they couldn't stop the run even when everybody in the stadium knows that's the call. It works in second half cause we got fresh legs and opponent is whipped. worked all last year except Bama cause they got equal depth and can sub without much loss in skills. Bama played the run and dared us to chunk and we couldn't effectively pass the ball. Hope that changes this season. Practicing passing is lot different than actually doing it in game in front of fans and TV cameras. We do it enough In game situation and it becomes easier and more effective.

Pretty much my exact feelings in a nutshell.

I'm not arguing with the final score. I just think that Mett and the WR's desperately need reps against a real opponent, because we are going to need a passing game later.

You can line up and run it down the throat of N. Texas, Washington, Towson, Idaho, etc. You can NOT do this against Bama and other quality SEC teams the entire game.

Hayes is not wrong!

Get Mett comfortable running all of the offense. Get into rhythmic drives where pass - ratio is more balanced. It gives you great practice and other teams something to think about.

anyone bitching about play calls after last night is a moron

there are atleast two-three more "tune-ups" to continue to work on things

can't fathom how some of you think. lots of check with me at the line last night. UDub playing the pass, you run. happened often last night, what the hell are you people watching?

I hope that these comparisons stop. Mett looked as good as ANY qb we have ever had last night. Jamarcus included. Of course the big games will tell us how truly good he is. Wish we still had Rueben.

suggests letting Mett go hog wild with his arm

I'm not an OC or HC, but I would be very hesitant in exposing what, 2 games in, appears to be a valuable weapon to the fire that would be directed toward it by letting it go "hog wild".

I would like a passing game that gave us bout 225 each time out, but I'm not gonna knock 475 yds and 41 pts a game.

Agree completely. If we can open up the offense more and trust Mettenberger to make plays, no one can stop us. No one.

As I watch how Mett is being handled by the staff, I am reminded about the last four years, when we HAD to throw the ball. We all know what happened to the psyche of our young QBs. Bring Mett along comfortably, and he will shine. Silver lining would be for him to return for his Heisman senior year.
