Those with knowledge of Aranda's hire said he was LSU coach Les Miles' top pick a year ago. But Aranda wouldn't budge from Wisconsin because LSU athletic director Joe Alleva only wanted to offer a two-year deal with that silly clause saying the school would only owe its assistants six months pay if Miles was fired.

I think (guess- I don't know) it came down to Steele having SEC experience AND the prospect of losing both Chavis & Haley and the recruiting implications without that "SEC experience" to come in immediately.

Steele did hit the ground running on recruiting.

This all seems like it was somewhat a planned transition to some degree.

As far as Alleva/Admin go, to me it seems the great divide was not contract finer points but, at least initially, CLM wanting to pull out all stops to retain Chavis and Alleva being fine with letting him walk.

I have no knowledge, but it doesnt surprise me. This Alleva guy has been undermining Miles for awhile now. He obviously had a plan to get rid of Miles that backfired. And once u go down that slippery slope its all or nothing usually.

Any other place or business if your plan fails this miserably, youre fired. The president himself mustve been involved in the conspiracy or is a complete idiot himself.

I dont get it, why not just fire Alleva? You hire an AD to make your sport teams better and to protect the brand.

If he doesnt do this, obviously he isnt the right guy for the job. His intentions dont mean a thing, u either produce or u fail when u begin to undermine a legend as a coach. Thats the risk u take.

If this is producing and worthy of a raise and continued employment, then either LSu's brass is up to something unscrupulous or theyre incompetent and now theyre just covering their own asses.
I cant wait to read the Les Miles' book when he finally tells these unappreciative political assholes to screw off.

I wish you guys knew half as much as you think you do. Please keep up with Louisiana politics. It is not Alleva that is the problem. It is F. King Alexander.

I hope the new Gov will recognize that and have him shown the door.

Actually, l can probably make this happen on the new digital billboard. Not sure if the other advertisers would appreciate it though.

Alleva makes this program one of the VERY few collegiate athletic programs that turns a profit. All of you who want to get rid of Alleva have no idea of everything that goes into being an AD and you want to can a guy who performs because of one tiny aspect of his job.

Lsu Athletics was profitable long before he came. His biggest job is to prevent negative press undermining the program. If he is going to try a coup to oust a successful coach you keep it quiet or get the damn thing done. He did neither and it made the department look like bungling idiots. Then it's followed by news of altering chavis' contract and then confirmed what others had suspected with hamstringing miles during the last dc negotiations. He intentionally damaged Lsu football for his own interests regardless of your feelings on miles.

Alleva didn't will the SEC network into existence, in fact he routinely puts LSU at odds with the SEC office with his annual condescending comments at media days. The SEC has been successful and LSU has benefitted. The pieces of LSU's AD budget that Alleva has direct control over, licensing and concessions/parking, account for very little of the overall pie. Just about any competent AD would be able to not rock that boat, yet overwhelming those are two things that LSU fans complain about the most with game day experience.

You are the one with no clue.

Alexander had to come in to save face. He didn't botch the process, Joe did

The emotion against Alleva is simple and stupid:

He was mean to Les

Why do you pretend to know a lot about Alleva's job? You didn't think things through very well when you blew up about the fabricated story on Chavis' contract about a month ago.

The "fabricated" story that turned out to be 100% authenticated by LSU's own lawyers? And LSU's athletic budget is public record. The notion that Joe Alleva is solely responsible for LSU being in the black simply doesn't hold water. It's flattering that you remember me though, Lou.

LSU wasn't turning a profit before Alleva?

I know the AD shouldn't be making things harder on his golden goose program.

Just as importantly, he has to have enough power to do his job effectively.

Alleva has been making things harder on Miles for a couple of years now...and that is even clearer if the OP is accurate.

And he has lost the power struggle with Miles. He has no power now. He has to go.

I don't. But I do think that the PR disaster that resulted from the debacle that occurred a month ago is a result of incompetence and basically requires a dismissal.

You not only just insulted Skip Bertman, but you pissed all over his career achievements as AD. Alleva isn't the one who deserves credit. He came in and is simply managing an already established gold mine. And it might even go before Skip. All Alleva does is not go crazy with spending to keep just at budget. Anybody with a brain could do that much. He is very replaceable!
