conference champions will be rewarded.

How is that an improvement if there is still so much inequality between the conferences and their scheduling? Sure, 12 is different but in no way do I see it as "better"

I'm what sport is there equality between conferences?

It makes it better because teams are rewarded for winning it on the field. If you win your conference it gives you a chance at the title. No more eye test for the P5 conferences. You want to win a title, winning your conference gives you a shot.

So the eye test still applies in some ways, but not to the top 4 byes, only conference champs get a bye.

I’m ok with watching a 2 loss team playoff bracket play out, we won a championship with a team that had 2 losses.

The 2001 10-3 LSU team that beat Illinois in the Sugar Bowl would have beaten either Miami or Nebraska in the NCG.

A problem I have is that - at 12 teams - some of the lower seeded teams will have not played a conference championship game. This gives essentially a bye to a less deserving team - a totally unfair and unearned advantage.

I’m looking at you 2011 Alabama as I type this.

And don’t tell me that it’s been a decade and I just need to get over it. I’ve vowed to take that to the grave.

All pro leagues have ebbs and flows with strength of schedules but they have a draft built to help the teams on the bottom get better. The gaps between divisions or conferences in those pro leagues with expanded playoffs are much MUCH smaller than what D1 football is. In lower divisions of college football with expanded playoff formats the talent and resource gap is much less than what it is in D1.

Expanding the playoff does nothing to address that but there are things that can be done to address it in the regular season.

You can't chose who plays in a playoff and say it's settled on the field because it simply isn't true. Until the actual issues are addressed, going from 4 to 12 is no different than going from 2 to 4. The current format has not provided one year with 4 legitimate contenders. Did the old format leave one out a couple of times, sure but expanding it to 4 only diluted the product and going from 4 to 12 would only make it worse unless the regular season is addressed first.

-First and foremost, STOP SCHEDULING GAMES YEARS IN ADVANCE. There is no need for this and COVID proved that beyond any doubt
-Eliminate games between FBS and FCS programs
-All conferences play the same amount of conference games (8 or 9, i don't care)
-With the remaining OOC games, teams are required to play two FBS opponents (one at home and one on the road and one of them must be another power 5). This can be done and left up to the conferences and programs OR by a constant rotation.
-Teams not in the power 5 must play four power 5 schools all on the road (just like every power 5 team has to do with their conf schedule) to be eligible for playoff consideration

It's essentially the same thing as expanding the playoff except it moves the importance of those playoff games to the regular season rather than ignoring the problem and just adding games at the end

Of the 26 games in the DII playoffs last year, 11 were 1 score games, so 42% were competitive. 6 were upsets. I'd say that's a slate of games that promotes their division pretty well.

The eventual champ played 10 regular season games and 4 playoff games, and was done playing by December 18th. That's 1 game less than what D1 champ will end up playing (assuming the champ plays a conf championship game).

Bottom line is it work in D2 because they want it to work, and there's no where near the money floating around there. Once the big sponsors figure a way to turn all the useless bowl games into opening round and semi-final games, if the money players can see a good ROI, they'll be on board.

It would require teams to cut out the non-conference games, which hurts the small schools in a BIG way, so the NCAA will need a way to prop them up somehow in the short term.
