While we're at it, two other things need to happen: kiss the bowls goodbye, as if you don't make the playoffs, you've have a failed season. None of these bowls mean anything any longer.
And realign Division I (FBS); if the AAC champ can go undefeated and get nowhere near, they need to drop out. Move the AAC, CUSA, MAC, Mountain West and the Sun Belt into an intermediate level. If you want, give them a playoff too, and you can dump the also-rans from the P5 into that playoff (like the NIT).
I don't like the sounds of that, but it's what needs to be done at this point. Anything else is half-assing it.

8 team would make the most sense.
Have the Sugar, Orange, Rose, and Fiesta Bowls serve as quarter finals and rotate between all Power 5 conference champs and 3 wildcards.
It only adds a week to the formula. I'm sure semis can be played at NFL sites or at the top seeded schools' stadiums.
Most classes don't start until 2nd or 3rd week in January.

Why? Division II and III have a legit playoff. The whole “but the season will be too long for these student athletes” argument is bullshite.
