This team needs to learn how to win. That's not a bad thing

With 2 tough road games against top tier teams, we split. The loss was a 1 pt OT game. This Sunday's game was riddled with bad calls and self inflicted wounds. We gave that one away. Played great for 3.5 quarters. At some point, Kellen needs to figure out how to close. He did not put the team in a position to do this Sunday. The calls on 3rd and short with a lead and in scoring position were bad. They were bringing the house and the offense imploded turning the ball over 4 times. Inexcusable on coaching and player execution/ball security. However, I don't think the 4 turnovers happen if Kellen would have played to protect the lead, takes the points, and slows the game down. Instead, he kept acting like we were playing from behind speeding up the offensive flow and created that mess. I really hope they take a deep dive into this game and see the obvious. It was really encouraging that we played better out the gate, ran the ball well, and before the collapse looked like we were going to win walking away. Seeing that this team does work to correct weak points (slow starts/run game) I have confidence they will work to correct end of games to protect leads and close out games.

Yep. You see this pretty often with young QBs, coaches, teams. Often it’s just the difference of executing a couple of plays or timely first downs. There’s so many teams that have a range of 6-11 to 10-7 that is dependent on probably a quarter’s worth of plays total.

Suntiger’s take - We are in year 2 of a total rebuild. Last year was a stripping down to the studs and shedding of salary. This year we are in true rebuild mode. We have a good QB, three good OL (LT, LG & C), a decent RB, a good WR & TE corp, and a few decent pieces on defense.
We lack experience.
We lack depth.
We lack established star power.
I agree that this team is establishing its identity and learning how to win. They need to learn how to play a complete game. We had a stupid slow start against the Lions and we failed to close against the Raiders. I think part of that was pressing when we faced adversity and were getting terrible calls.
But I like that we don’t quit. I see the potential we have like the 9 min drive we had to go down the field and score last week.
We need a better RG/RT combo. We need someone who can consistently rush the passer. We also need some depth. That’s most teams in the NFL, but I see promise and we are competing and trying and that gives me hope.

kind of hard to have a balanced offense when your OL is in shambles and your RB room is either washed up or just not that good
you close games out by effectively running the ball and running clock, not easy for us to do right now.
if he gets stuffed on short again, we turn it over, and raiders score we're murdering the guy for forcing the run when we've proven we can't run it effectively. Kind of just have to play with the cards we're dealt at the moment

Outside of Chris Olave on offense, we are severely lacking any great to elite players on the roster. We need a couple DUDEs on defense. It was a blessing having someone like this on every level of our defense at the end of Brees career. I understand they aren't easy to come by, but let's hope we find some in the coming years whether through draft or FA.

Major key
The starters at these positions haven’t been great and the depth is poor. Our best teams were two deep at RB and the next tackle up was always solid. Payton knew this could cripple a season
There needs to be a sense of urgency tied to Shough’s contract. We need guys to emerge and establish their self this year so we can see what we need the next two seasons on Shough’s rookie deal

Our 1st 3 games we've gotten basically every version of game we could have to learn to deal with
Game 1: Tough road game, bad start, some unfair calls, almost pulled it out
Game 2: Even tougher road game. Came away with a win
Game 3. A home game you should have won 9/10. Started good, finished poorly. Sure, some unfair shite, but enough was on you.
I think you've also seen a different emotional reaction to each one. This last one was the most upset/dejected as i've seen Tyler after a game. Thats not a bad thing.
The more outcomes your team can learn to overcome, process, and deal with, the better they will be at navigating a full season of outcomes.

This is precisely why they picked Tyson and paid for Etienne. So far, well, not so great, but we’re early in the process. I hope we get to see the Saints’s 3 receiver sets with Olave, Tyson, and Vele for a meaningful amount of time. That would be a position group a lot of defenses would have trouble handling.

There was a point in the 3rd where they could not stop our offense. Haven't seen that since Drew. Then as it goes for young teams they figured out how to lose.
