re: The state of LSU baseball is....

I said before the season started that this team looked really thin in the batting order, and that it looked like the team's fortunes rested on hoping that Yocom, Fields, Powell, & Moore all came through (or at least 3 out of 4) as big time recruits.
I haven't had a chance to watch much of the games, or any of them in person, so I don't want to say much in the way of specific analysis. However, at the SEC level of play, I know that you can't count on players like Katz, Dozar, Hanover, Slaid, & Snikeris, to be your bedrock starters in the lineup. I've got no problem with scrappy players, and it's always a feel good story to have a couple in the lineup (like Katz & Hanover) so long as there are big guns elsewhere to help pick up the slack, but let's face it, LSU's hitting lineup seems to be lacking in talent lately.
For the last 3 seasons I've been harping on the need for LSU to recruit better hitting talent at the corner positions (LF, RF, 3B, 1B, & DH), and although I don't want to jump to any premature conclusions, given the quality of opponents so far, this is one of the worst-looking starts of a baseball season at LSU over the last few decades.
Looking forward, I think the Tigers really need for Foster & Moore to have surprisingly good seasons, and to have either Fields or Powell emerge as a big contributor in time for the meat of the conference schedule.
Again, most of this is just from knowledge of past seasons and looking at this season's stat lines, but damn, things are looking bad when the team can't score runs and Slaid has 5 starts in LF.

Our pitching staff is pretty damn good, we just can't hit the damn ball. We have NO hitters. None...zilch

Sometimes Josh takes the sunshine just a little too far.

Josh is usually pretty quick to light up Les and co. but for whatever reason doesn't like to get after PM very much. Solid poster, but I've never gotten why that is.

Just like ALL the bandwagoners that jumped on board in the late 80s. There are probably only about 150 real fans because that's all there was when Skip started here.

He's a baseball team apologist but RIPs the football team with some pretty irrational stuff.

We may have the best starters in the country but, we have one if not the worst coach in the SEC. Period - Wake up and smell the community Come one.
Same old story just another year.

It's a little early to panic. Pitching wise we should be better. Gaus and eades are as good as anybody in the league. After that if we can piece together sunday we shoulde be ok. But todays effort is cause for concern. Hitting wise unless a couple new guys step up we could be in trouble. Same lineup as last year minus mahtook. Without power you have to hit 1-9 and be able to run. We dont do either. If we are on the bubble again this weekend could hurt.

One run in 2 days would be pathetic in SEC play. Against the likes of Appalachian St? There are no words. PM deserves any heat he gets for this pathetic display.

If you really think about it, in 2009 we had plenty of position players that you could say, "they're going to get drafted highly." Who on this years team can you for sure say "this is a really good hitter who will get drafted highly"? Right now, no body. We were loaded in 09 and the players just haven't been there since then (on the hitting side)

Dumb arse, today is the first time this year that the pitching was not solid.

If this is the kind of fan you are than please GTFO and go away.
Also last year we started on fire then just got worse and worse, in '08 we really weren't that great, then we got ridiculously hot and won 19(?) games in a row. So if the story for LSU baseball under PM is we get super hot for half the season, I am glad we are not there yet.

I thought going in this season would hinge on the pitching staff. Still think the bats will come around some, but they should be lighting up this pitching. It's solid stuff, but nothing they are not going to see every game in SEC play.

I agree that pitching will form the backbone for this team's success, but in terms of separating the knowns from the unknowns, I kind of chalked up LSU's pitching in the "known" category this spring .... or at least more so than the hitting and fielding categories.

Katz was a beast in the SEC last season
Posted on 2/26/12 at 7:17 pm to Lester Earl
My take on Katz is basically this--He's good; it's good that LSU has him; but on a great team he would be more of a supporting cast type of player rather than the guy expected to carry the load.
He doesn't walk very much, which lowers his OBP, and he's not a big threat to steal. Maybe I'm too hard on him, though. He did come through well in SEC play last year.
