So even if you went through a gauntlet and somehow came out on top, a team that lost 4 games that year can still take you out in the playoffs.
If there were a 24-team playoff in 2001, LSU would have won the national championship. By the end of the season, they were playing well enough to beat any team in America.

Or let's saw Auburn and Alabama each have 2 losses one year and are playing each other last game in the Iron Bowl. Everyone is tuned into that. Loser is OUT of the playoffs. Now? It literally doesn't matter.
While you make a good point, It felt unfair all those years that LSU could have a great season but lose the Bama game in November and because it happened late in the year we all knew deep down the season was over. At that point since we weren’t in another conference or the SEC East which was weaker at the time, we watched a weak Big 10 team or another conference get to the championship.
The 12 team format feels okay. The unlimited transfer needs to be reduced to once and your school of choice out of HS or transfer needs a two year lock in at a minimum.

Well it’s no longer “college” football. It’s an NFL type minor league littered with mercenaries wandering aimlessly.
