The Slow Start - Sam Leavitt & Dilin Jones

Putting this whole slow start for Sam Leavitt into perspective, I broke up what he did on the first 3 drives of the game (all but 2-3 of those plays being in the 1st quarter) versus what he and Dilin did on the last 6 drives. You can see how giving #13 the ball made a significant difference in Leavitt's play.
Drives 1-3
Leavitt
Passing: 5/8, 23 yards, 1 sack for -5
Rushing: 3 carries, 10 yards
Dilin Jones
2 touches, 1 yard
Drives 4-9
Leavitt
Passing: 11/19, 135 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 sack for -3
Rushing: 12 carries, 61 yards, 1 TD
Dilin Jones
23 touches, 112 yards, 1 TD
I believe you can point at Leavitt, the defense, and maybe a few key plays missed by others, but the sticking point for me is that Leavitt and this offense established no rhythm early, giving that crowd and their offense the momentum they needed to snowball on us to the tune of a 17-0 lead.
All 3 of those first drives were killed by getting behind the sticks. 3rd Downs of 15, 9, and 15 respectively. I'd like to see playcalling and decision making from Leavitt put a greater emphasis of gaining no less than 2-3 yards on 1st and 2nd down early in the game this week. The stats above show that this is done by getting the ball to #13.

we handed the ball off 2x in our first 14 plays. We didn't try to run it until we were down 17-0. We then handed the ball off 8x (not including QB runs) on our 17 play drive for a TD.
Our coaches decided to go out and try to throw the ball even though our running game is our strength.

Oline wasn’t blocking anyone, run or pass early on but that’s gotten lost in the blame game.

I just choose to believe that the staff figured out who they were in the second half and it'll look better moving forward.

They were stacking the box. Wr screen passes or a fake wr screen bomb down sideline would have been nice

I thought the same, we were a little vanilla and predictable early on. Could be Kiffin didn’t want anything high risk and figured the D would hold them down until the energy settled. The D just didn’t show up.

Like I stated earlier….if the LSU defense swarms OM on that lateral that ended up around the 6 yd line, and takes possession, then we march into the EZ, and change the mental outlook for UM.
IF we had basically scored 1st due to our D, then the UM team & crowd think “oh shi….they are for real”
However, we don’t.. they punt, and their D still has an attitude to stop our offense - and cause us to punt after a terrible 3 and out.
The mental aspect of the game can change in a second.

Leavitt needs to learn to play quickly physically and slow mentally.

I didn’t understand this. Why did they not feed Jones until we were already down 17-0?
Throwing on first down in the first possession of the game? Nothing hushes a crowd like a few first down runs to start the game. A freaking 3 and out is a buzz kill.

I'd like to see some old fashioned boot legs and roll outs. That o line has serious pass pro issues. Get him out of the pocket, use his legs and hit slants, 7 to 10 yard each. Gets him settled and if there is a run opening for him he can outrun most LBs in the country to quick gains.
