I was working this game as the scorer, and talked with the replay official. Yes, they missed the illegal block, but that can't be corrected by review. Once the call was made (or not made) on the field, the only things for review were: did LSU touch the ball before it went 10 yards (yes), and who recovered (UNC). But it should have been flagged for the contact by UNC. No one even mentioned the formation, I think that was far too close to call.

Whether they are or they are not, it is not a relevant question. The player receiving the ball is beyond ten yards. What occurs in the boundary or whatever it is called is irrelevant under those circumstances.

But was it an illegal formation??.. they are more concerned about that since the other is so obvious

New onside kick method:

1.) Kick the ball approximately 5 yards
2.) Nail anyone who is remotely close to the ball as soon as you can.
3.) Hope that it makes contact with the opposing team first, and then you get to keep it.
*Note: this will probably need a replay every time because there's sure to be bodies flying.

Heck, this should bring the onside kick's odds up to nearly 50% probability.

To be fair, I could go on that board and pretend to be Rogers Redding. (Is that the right name?)

As for the illegal formation, that was extremely close. That's one of those calls that could have gone either way. I could see how they would have thrown a flag for that.

Go read his post history. He has been the official scorer for nearly every event in the GA Dome...referencing games for college and pro teams in multiple sports.

*Sigh...*

How about this? If it was an illegal block (and why would it be called a block?), then it occurs on nearly every onside kick attempt where the both teams are expecting the kick.
