The offense has to improve; the next three weeks offer the best chance see it happen

LSU currently ranks (out of 130):

105th in yards/play
112th in yards/game
95th in rushing yards/att
92nd in rushing yards/gm
96th in passing yards/att
106th in passing yards/gm
106th in passer rating
112th in 3rd down conversions

However, we've also played two strong defenses. The next three weeks offer the most moderate overall stretch we'll face. In yard per play, LA Tech ranks 26th, Florida is 49th, and Ole Miss is 108th.

We've been buoyed by an elite defense (6th in S&P+) and excellent special teams (18th in S&P+) play this year, and our turnover margin is 4th nationally. Our current offense leaves very little room for error among our other units, so improvement in our offensive efficiency is a must.

Here's to climbing out of the 90s or worse in our offensive metrics over the next few weeks.

ETA - SEC ranks, by request:

Last in yards/play
Last in yards/game
Last in rushing yards/att
Last in rushing yards/gm
Last in passing yards/att
Last in passing yards/gm
Last in passer rating
Last in 3rd down conversions

So take out those games and only use the game against the FCS school...

Or do what he said and see if they improve over the next few weeks with a larger sample size...

I agree there needs to be improvement but it's really hard to look at these out of 130 rankings and take them seriously three weeks into the season. Most teams have played one, maybe two opponents with a pulse.

I feel like although the stats are bad, the offense just gets it done when it needs to get done. That’s why to me at least, it doesn’t seem as bad as previous years despite the poor numbers.

Yeah, Miami is 4th in the nation in total D and Auburn is 40th so it's all relative at this point in the season.

There’s a decent point there, but we played Miami and Auburn not the 85 Bears and 2000 Ravens. No one would expect 500+ yds and 50 points. But we are completing less than 50%!of our passes and 3rd down efficiency is terrible also we’re scoring in the red zone but not enough TDs

Why is “we played 2 ranked opponents” and excuse for Offense but the defense seems to be doing fine?

Fair.

2018 #s v 2017 #s

5.08 v 6.19 - yards/play
333.7 v 411.1 - yards/game
3.91 v 4.79 - rushing yards/att
153.7 v 207.6 - rushing yards/game
6.8 v 8.8 - passing yards/att
180.0 v 203.5 - passing yards/game
115.5 v 149.8 - passer rating
31.9% v 41.4% - 3rd down conversions

We've still got quite far to go just to be as efficient on offense in 2018 as we were in 2017.

Have we turned the ball over all season? We are doing what it takes to beat good teams. Defense and special teams. Who cares if we complete 50% or 5% of our passes if we beat top ten teams away from home?

I agree this has to improve but I just checked the total offense rankings from 2017 vs current 2018, and last year's leader, Oklahoma, doesn't crack the top 10.

I agree with the OP's premise in principle but stating it as you did is a better way to look at it. The fact that texas tech is putting up almost 700 yards a game vs OM, lamar, and houston doesn't tell me anything.

Because Miami and Auburn are much better on Defense than Offense maybe.

They are both in the upper 50s in total offense.

Now imagine if they hadn't played one of the top defenses.

I'm just covering my bases. Frankly, Toledo looked much better offensively vs Miami than we did, as did Washington vs. Auburn. Those defenses hurt the stats, but not enough to explain how much worse we are than 2017, for example.

We're currently 29th in total defense. You think that's an accurate representation?

On the extreme end, sure, but even if you look at the raw numbers vs 2017, we're underperforming a year where we forced our OC to take a hike.

Holy Les Miles Batman

You ain’t beating enough teams to get to the level we want to go completing 48%. We don’t need pinball machine numbers but we can’t be crap either (see Miles, Les)

Miami is 14th in scoring offense

Auburn, who also played 2 top defenses is still mid 50s
