I've had much, much less emotional attachment to college football the last 2 years.

It's sad, because for decades, when Saturday arrived, I could feel the electricity. Now, it's just not there.

The game is much different, with NIL and the transfer portal.

I still watch, but with much less excitement and emotion.

There was a time when pro boxing was huge. Giant prize purses, people bought tickets to go watch big championship fights in the Super Dome not live but shown on a screen(!). That sport is dead now. I can’t even name the current heavyweight champion.

Free agency in the NFL at least involves 1/2/3 year contracts and there are salary caps to ensure parity. This unregulated college free agency and NIL dynamic will kill the sport that drives the advertising dollars. Like other people, with ZERO connection to the players I will stop watching. I ain’t just gonna watch 11 yellow hats run around. Might as well stick to pro ball at that point.

I am optimistic. I think coaches and staff used to spend slot of time/money on recruiting in the “old days”. And if they got it wrong for 2 years, team Would be bad for 5 or 6.

Now, with the portal, I’m hoping coaches get to spend LESS time recruiting and can just focus more on coaching players.

If the portal democratizes recruiting, and makes it easier and faster ….. maybe it’ll be a good thing?
