This is how the NFL does it, and college football is now just minor league pro football.

Those days are gone. The right coach can turn a program around in 1 or 2 years. We need to start treating the head coach like a commodity. No long term buyout, get it done in 1 to 2 years or we move on to the next coach.

And what coach is going to sign that?

I get what you are saying but nobody worth a shite is signing that.

The market will eventually rest but it will take several cycles. The today cycle? Kiffin is about to make 13-14million per year on a long term deal.

Guaranteed long-term contracts are the only reason a school gets a "big name" coach these days. After a few years of success, those contracts get extended in order to keep the successful ones from being poached. The LSU job isn't that attractive as it once was with NIL and the transfer portal and the impact on how fast you can build a team. Unless huge, guaranteed contracts are eliminated, they will be essential to attracting a proven "big name" coach, and they won't be eliminated. All Power 4 schools can basically offer the same annual salary, it's the length that get's a coach to leave one for another. If you go after a Group of 5 coach and are successful, you're going to be doing it every three years when they get poached by a Power 4 school offering what you won't.

Why would we want to hire a big name coach? The big name coaches in the most recent cycle (Brian Kelly, Lincoln Riley) are all circling the bowl. Who would’ve predicted that a guy like Cignetti would be on the verge of a second playoff appearance, while a guy like Luke Fickell would be on the brink of being fired?

A Sunbelt Billy or Butch Jones type with little to no buyout puts your program in a much better position than a BK with a huge buyout.

Even Sunbelt Billy just got paid $21 million to walk away.

These insane buyouts need to be a case study in Sports Admin degree programs

Cool thesis, but Woody’s degree is PoliSci

Cignetti illustrates the issue perfectly though. Indiana guaranteed him $80+ million after his first win over a ranked opponent. Why do you think they did that? Because he had become a “big name coach” and they thought someone would poach him otherwise.

Like.. yeah, Indiana looks good. Yeah, they’re probably going to the CFP again. Does that justify an $80 million guaranteed contract? I guess time will tell. But it comes down to what someone else is willing to pay him.

Why? Because:
1. It's LSU
2. We deserve someone who has won on the biggest stage
3. How will we beat Bama with a Billy Napier?
4. LSU is a Top 5 job and must have a Top 5 coach
5. Curley Hallman

That's why I said type. In other words, an up and coming coach, not a proven coach at the highest level. A shark, not a whale. 21M in this case is a whole easier to manage than 53M!

I said this and got downvoted pretty hard.

I agree.

Did the Dream Team for Olympic Basketball really need a coach? Don’t think so.

Did 2019 need a 10M a year coach to be the best in history? Don’t think so.

So if you want wins, you spend the money on players and not coaches.
