We can't bunt and that's not an excuse. It's a tragedy. Our coaches should spend all Fall teaching this and preparing us. Especially with a potentially weak pitching staff you need to be able to score anyway possible. Unacceptable at this level.

Agreed. How would learning how to bunt hurt this team? I am not a coach nor have I ever been, but watching Texas, CSF, UCLA and Irvine it is clear it is a deadly weapon when you can do it. You will at some point face great pitching and will have to be able to bunt to win. We won't always have two all american starters and we will have to win by other means instead of trying to kill the ball.

He was inconsistent in his game management. He tried to bunt with Gaudet on Friday in the same situation, but lets him hit away on Sunday. I am for letting him hit since he can run it out the park on any given pitch, but be consistent.

He(Mainier)has bad body language in the dugout which 18 -23 yr old guys see and react to. He might be able to recruit but he has now game plan at all when it comes to game management

Don't forget that he had Gibbs bunt in the SEC Championship Game with the score deadlocked and he bunted into a double play. I agree with the decision to let Gibbs hit. Taking him out for a pinch bunter is ludicrous.

Amazing that he has been able to win so many games with no clue on how manage a game. Must be one lucky SOB.

the more I'm convinced managing in game situations is not his strongest attribute. When your first two hitters reach base in the eighth inning of a one run elimination game its baseball 101 that you lay down a bunt with the next hitter. If that hitter has zero ability to bunt then you pinch hit with the best bunter you have available for sole purpose of moving the runners up a base.

Mike Gillespe in his sleep would have known to bunt. Augie Garrido in a drunken stupor would have known to bunt. Its an elimination game. You either score or you cease to play baseball for eight months.

But Paul Maineiri made yet another bad coaching decision which just reinforces my suspicion about his inability to manage games.

Now this is where I invite rantards to respond and confirm yet another one of my suspicions, that many of you know very little about the sports you watch.

Funniest post I've read yet about this situation was "Maineiri didn't want to go to extra innings." Yea ranter, losing in nine was his preference.

I've posted previously about Maineiri's game management shortcomings but this one is so blatant that even I wouldn't have thought he could be so obtuse.

Mainieri's always had trouble managing pitchers. But it was easy to overlook that with a trip to Omaha in 08 and a national title the year later.

i would have bunted, but that's because i grew up playing 'small ball' (which imo is inferior ). i completely agree with PMs decision to not bunt Gibbs.

i think we needed more small ball.. covers up our poor pitching. but that's just this season, last and next season may be different.

a quote from Paul Mainieri,
quote:

you don't look back at your last game nor ahead to your next game it's the game at hand that counts

there have been many coaching mistakes this season, I hope a learning lesson will prevent us from having this kind of season again

Those of us who've been around since the early Bertman days know that given the same circumstances, skip wouldve done the same thing...

What's hurt this program is signing so many stars who get drafted and never step foot on campus. By signing these guys, we miss out on the second tiered stars who don't want to be stuck behind a first tier player. ie zach Von rosenberg.

Absolutely agree.

Disagree. Cather isn't like playing outfield. General rule of thumb is to never pull a catcher if at all possible, especially your best bat in case the game goes extra innings.

But it's irrelevant because, according to Maineiri, Gibbs is one of the better bunters on the team.

Disagree. He does a really good job with in-game management. He definitely made a blunder yesterday, but every single coach is going to have that happen. I'm not about to call him a mediocre game manager based on one bad call.

Yes you do, its odds. You have a better chance to score a run with runners on third and second and one out than you do with runners on first and second and no outs....regardless of who is at the plate.

idiot, when Gibbs is at the plate.....we lose our best catcher if we go to extra

Anytime you look BACK on a play and question it you can say you would have done it differently but you can't say the coach SHOULD have done what you would have done. The truth is that situations present opportunities for different options and the coach, who knows much more than you do about his players and his team, makes a decision on how to play it.And like a previous poster stated you can bet PM questions his decisions that don't turn out successful. The fact that it doesn't work doesn't mean it was the wrong decision. The other option may have failed as well.Example: Gibbs and Gaudet bunting into double plays.I guess every time PM called a hit and run it was right if it worked and wrong if it didn't.Remember the hit and run when the pitcher threw a one hopper and our hitter (can't remember who) missed on the swing and our runner( Mikie?) was thrown out.I guess he shouldn't have called the hit and run when the pitcher was going to throw a one hopper right? Second guessing may be fun but your opinion on what PM should have done is meaningless, imo.Sorry Jay

I freely admit I dont keep up with baseball.

I pull for the Tigers and the Frogs any chance I get but by no means do I claim to be an expert when t comes to college baseball.

My question is, with the tying run on second and a forced play at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, why wouldnt the defense simply throw the runner out at third on the bunt? Wouldnt that mean you would have the same situation then with the fourth batter with one more out?

The more I read your posts, the more I realize what an a-hole you are and the idiots that agree with you. I'm not bragging, but I actually graduated from LSU in'72. You want to talk baseball, then talk about the years when the Box was lucky to have forty people in the stands. If you can do a better job then please coach My Alma Mata, otherwise, please continue to support your junior high or high school team.
