But all of these fools think they are.

The time and commitment it takes to manage a roster like LSUs is monumental. It’s not just Xs and Os but the ability to work the clubhouse and keep guys heads straight. His biggest job this year was managing these massive differences in personality.

a lineup that has to lean on athletic juggernauts like beloso and dugas indicates an all time great lineup?

I’m critical of Jay because I think it’s warranted in some aspects but downplaying Dugas? He isn’t hitting well right now, but I think Ben mentioned yesterday that Dugas led the SEC in RBI a few years ago.

That has nothing to do with plate performance. That is supposed to be his forte. Defense is and has been up and down like a damn roller coaster ride. They were terrible last year and unreliable this year.

Not one person can point to any real accomplishment that Jay Johnson had that warranted him being named the coach at LSU. Hell smoke Laval did what JJ has done and did it twice. What we’re seeing right now is not the exception for Johnson it’s the norm. In my opinion, he didn’t face the competition out west that he’s had to face in the SEC that will show the college coach you are.

Ok they beat us by half a game when we had a game cancelled.

That isn’t the boom you thought it was

Defense isn’t top of the charts this year but it’s good enough.

I want to see my team dominate and handle business and win the SEC without any “but what if”…

This team was in prime position to do that and blew it against some of the worst teams in the SEC.

Can they rebound and make a run to Omaha to win it all, sure. I’ll be in the Box cheering them on for the next two weeks.

But if they don’t, this season will have to be considered a huge failure. We have won nothing.

Why didn’t we win the toughest conference in baseball? Who in this conference had a better roster than us?

The simplest answer is that Johnson got too cute with a 9-run lead against Miss St that he thought was safe and did too much experimenting, chief amongst that was bringing in Little and leaving him in long enough to give up 4 runs. If he doesn’t bring in Little, LSU wins that game and the conference.

There were of course other contributors. LSU faced SC early when they were playing well and Auburn late when they were playing well Arkansas had the benefit of the opposite. Outside those series LSU was 17-7 and Arkansas was 15-9. Florida drew Auburn early and Kentucky late. That was more subtle but would have been enough to swing the standings. The timing of LSU’s bad weekend coming against Miss St was also unlucky. A bad weekend against a better team would have still resulted in going 1-2 in a series they otherwise would have gone 2-1 or 1-2 anyway. It cost them 2 games against Miss St.

Arkansas went almost exclusively to 6 pitchers to overcome the injuries to their staff. Johnson kept experimenting and trying different combinations to figure out what would work. Hopefully that will pay dividends in the postseason but it cost them 2-3 games. Arkansas may find they don’t have enough pitching or they may breakdown from overwork.

Florida was just somewhat lucky in their record. They only outscored opponents by 33 runs compared to 40 for LSU in one less game. They also scored more runs than their underlying metrics would suggest while LSU gave up more runs than their underlying metrics.

And we’ve had no problems with hitting all year genius. The pitching injuries caused us to throw guys we usually would not which has caused the problems we have

Arkansas was picked 3rd in the West. Had as many, if not more, injuries to pitchers. LSU’s batting lineup is significantly superior to Arkansas.

Yet…. Arkansas did finish ahead of LSU.
It is a boom weather or not you think it is.

One of my biggest issues with Jay is simple fundamentals. Our base running is just putrid.

In back to back days, this week, I watched Travinski casually round 3rd base only to get picked off simply because he was too casual and unaware as was our 3rd base coach. Then… after Beloso hits a double, Travinski has to be held at 3rd simply because he didn’t go 1/2 way between 2nd and 3rd on contact. You do that, and he’s home easily. Both of those mistakes cost LSU the tying run.

This…. On top of watching Frey come in twice as a pinch runner only to royally screw up simple fundamental base running and get picked off both times to end the game.

These little things on top of others is my concern. Jay just doesn’t seem on top of all the little details that determine winning and losing games you shouldn’t

And yet LSU was still one cancelled game from winning the SEC. Very similar resumes. Ark actually got swept and lost road series while LSU did not.

Last I checked before the SEC tournament LSU was 1 percent less than Florida in fielding percentage. The fielding has improved this season. I believe the pitching will next season.

The Powerhouse of College Baseball has scored 5, 10, 4, and 4 in our last four games. The 10 runs against South Carolina was nice. But the other three games were all losses and not very powerhouse of us.

This melting around here is insane. The season is not even over. It is not like they got blown out in Hoover. A number of people agreed before the A&M game it would probably be better to get out of tournament after the Arkansas game. There were level headed responses. Now people are melting as if the season is over. It's pathetic. It's amazing to me how quickly fans turn on a coach who was 1 cancelled game away from winning the SEC. And the season isn't even over. In fact it is disgusting.

Sure. Who doesn’t want that?

There’s a difference in that and freaking out about losing a comparatively meaningless sec tournament.

We fail to make Omaha and I’ll agree that we underachieved. Until then I have no problem with a national seed and losing the SEC on a technicality.
