Why stop at bowl games? The season was over for LSU after losing to Miss State and Troy. Should have just kicked out all the seniors and NFL ready juniors.

Amirite?

I just feel like that's creating a very slippery slope regarding players and bowl games. Pretty soon we're going to get to a point where all the starters shut it down and get ready for the draft. This is particularly bad for teams like LSU that typically produce a high volume of NFL talent. When we're losing to the UCFs of the world because all our starters shut it down and we're playing all freshman, it's going to look bad and it's going to impact recruiting going into the offseason.

well then get ready for it

we all know that CFB is big business

the kids know it too

simple risk management at this point

the NFL knows it too. they want the best, and healthiest, assets as well

sometimes it matters. that's why underdogs can win a bowl game when they shouldn't. the big dog can't get up for the game and it's a huge game for the underdog.

sports radio last nite and a sideline observer of lsu's practice said there wasn't much juice. he did note that the game is still a long way away. this game is important for coach 0 as he has made clear.

it is an important game in the win loss column for perception, recruiting and starting on the next season.

I do agree that it's not always the case.

The irony is that Clowney was one of the more recent examples of someone who everyone accused of "playing for the NFL" in his last year at USC, but his highlight moment came from a bowl game.

Personally, I'll never blame a guy with NFL aspirations for sitting out a bowl game. It just doesn't matter and could cost them health and money moving forward.

Not a competitive bone in your body, I guess.

LSU fans are the only fan base in the country who encourage their best players to sit out games. Meanwhile, Alabama convinces first and second round projected juniors to stay for an entire senior season.

You'll get downvoted, but you are absolutely right. Natural physical ability (speed, size, athleticism) matter MUCH more to NFL scouts/GM's/coaches than what a guy did in a game that is essentially an exhibition. Win or lose LSU's season ends. A win doesn't advance them one step closer to the championship...which is the exact same result if they lose.

There is a reason guys like Jalen Collins get drafted in the 2nd round even though their college production isn't great, while a guy like Tyran Mathieu gets taken in the 3rd round despite being arguably the best pure playmaker at LSU in maybe 50 years. Collins had the physical attributes NFL teams want. God only makes so many people with his size/speed combination. NFL teams can't coach size/speed. They can teach a great athlete to be a good football player.

Likewise, off the field issues don't matter if you have rare athleticism. Ask Rashard Robinson who was drafted in the 4th round (one behind Mathieu) despite only playing essentially 1.5 seasons at LSU before getting kicked off the team and out of school. He wasn't anywhere close to the playmaker that Mathieu was. Yet, he gets chosen only one round behind where Mathieu was drafted...even after not playing football for over a year!

Bowl games are only a big deal to fans and coaches. For the players it's a vacation (unless you want to tell us trips to Disney World, eating contests and shopping sprees are part of every game week during the season). For NFL scouts it's one last chance for top players to get seriously injured.

It’s an exta football game to watch the tigers play until next year, who gets upset over this?

exhibition.

Its extra practice for players that will play next year, reps for 2nd and 3rd string guys that dont get many and the ability to play in a big time game against a big time opponent. Bowl games are about the future.

So the only reason to play college football is if you are dreaming of a NFL career? Being part of a winning college football is of no concern? Why even keep score?

Then we should have shut the season down after losing to Troy and falling to 3-2 on the year. Since, you know, a national championship was out of the window.

Just think of all the rest those NFL bodies could have received by skipping the last 7 games of the regular season!!!!

"salty fan" exhibit A

this thread is about a very specific situation where a player will be leaving the program to pursue a career in the NFL

so he doesn't play. LSU pulls his scholarship? who cares? players wasn't going to classes anyway. his full-time job now will be to prep for the combine.

Exactly. Here at LSU, we don't want to play for championships. We're content with 8-4 or 9-3 as long as we get to beat our chest and say "NFLSU" and finish 4th in the conference with NFL probowlers.

You would be bitcoin like crazy if LSU were not bowl eligible or playing in a lesser bowl. I am greatful young men like Guice are real student athletes without this totally jaded and self motivated View.

over react much?

so you would tell your kid to risk injury and loss of (potentially millions) future revenue as a top 20 pick for a game like the one LSU is getting ready to play?

Man, are you naive and ignorant. The bowl game doesn't mean much for some players, but it means a lot to others. It is an exhibition game and a joke, but it will make some players a lot of money.

To the NFL bound players (unless playoffs): probably doesn't mean much to many of them. Some it will.

To the players behind those: means everything

To the coaches: it matters alot, future and present, on a personal and professional level

To the program: it matters- $ and player wise. More about the future, but includes the present.

So as a fan...
The only reason it shouldn't matter is if your "fandom" investment lies only with certain players. Otherwise, it matters to those other players, the coaches, the program and has a large impact on the future.
