I heard a really interesting piece from one of my die-hard Bama buddies just awhile ago. One of the line coaches at the school he coaches football for, John Causey, use to play on the O-line for the Tide back in the day. He recounted a trip to Tiger Stadium, and having to walk past Mike the Tiger before the game started. He stated words such as 'never been so scared in all his life as this 400-pound cat looked him dead in the eyes'. Mike, according to him, simply sat there, staring, and started flicking his tail, as if to say 'keep moving u t-bone steak bitch'.

Also, in this telepathy moment, he remembers thinking in his mind, and saying to Mike, 'if you dont eat me, and let me play this game, I promise I will never walk by your cage again'. In return, he swore Mike said back to him, 'you know these bars can't hold me right? They are just for decoration.'

Just listening to the retelling of the story, I could tell the guy was still scared $hitless to this day, but he appears to have a nice experience to reflect on (now that it is over)

It beckons the question: Is there any team mascot out there as awesome as Mike?? Imagine THAT happening to at least half the visiting team. I'm sure Mike has added to our stellar home record in his own little way

Why would anyone be afraid of a tiger in a cage?

being truly afraid of an animal which is in a cage is excessive, but make no mistake, that is an intimidating creature.

Thats just something that demands respect! Yeah, it don't change your mentality, or the outcome of a game, but you always know why its in a cage.

Back in the early 70s Mike had some swipe room through the cage bars. If the opposing players got too close they could get clawed.

yeah or put the motherfricker on a leash and him run OUT with the team. every game they could pick a team captain to do it. obviously you'd have to put a muzzle on him but right now mike looks like a big pussy

They need to let him out and run the sideline on a leash like Colorado does with Ralphy the buffalo.

I have a buddy who used to play ol for indiana who also visited lsu back in the day. What you just described is his most salient memory. Must have been pretty damn intimidating.

Mike NEVER had "swipe room" between the bars.

Putting on a muzzle does nothing for super sharp claws.

Oh Yes he DID!! In the early 70's the bars on his cage were about 6 inches or greater apart and he could put his paw through the bars.

One year we played South Carolina and the USC cheerleaders were taunting Mike with their chicken and they got too close to the bars. Out pops a huge striped paw and GOODBYE Chicken! I saw this with my own eyes and LSU had to apologize and buy them a new chicken. The next game had the wire set up on his cage, that we have now.

would you want to be sitting in the lower bowl if they lost control of him. good luck with putting that muzzle on him too.

Heard a similar story from a former Univ Miami player from the 70s. He claimed the whole team was in awe of the tiger and the atmosphere.
