The fallacy in the "one hit wonder" narrative

Every major contributor to this championship was hand picked by Coach O. Whether it be recruiting, coaching hires, or keeping parts of the staff in place when he took over, Coach O has been money in evaluating people.

Typically programs can't recruit the first class after a coaching change. Look at his first recruiting class: Stevens, Chaisson, Deculus, Shelvin, Phillips, Delpit, Ingram, Charles, Queen, CEH, Jets Jefferson. Then in 2018 he adds Marshall, Chase, and Joey Heisman.

As far as hiring coaches, he took a shot on Canada, quickly realized he wasn't the guy, and was bold enough to believe in Ensminger. After the 2018 Alabama game he realized the spread was a must. So what does he do? Hire a 30 year old analyst who turns out to be a coaching phenom.

I don't think many of us are buying the narrative that we're some one year wonder, given we have a 20 year record of being a top 10-15 program, but this just illustrates how silly it is. I doubt we compete for the title next year, but the future at LSU is literally brighter than it's ever been.

I believe this, like Coach O said post-game, is only the beginning.

tl;dr: frick dem

We've won three titles in the last 16 years under three different coaches. There's more to it than luck, or even who's on the sidelines.

It's going to be interesting to see who Coach O will get to replace Aranda, that's the key to the ultimate success of the team.

Offensively, Munoz should be OK replacing Brady, and he's already here and familiar with what we did this past season.

Recruiting good players is a given and we should be fine in that regard.

Coach O is:

3-0 vs Auburn
2-0 vs Georgia
3-1* vs A&M
2-2 vs Florida

It is wishful thinking by most of the SEC to say we are headed for a cliff. Ed doesn’t have much left to prove. 3 losses is the floor. If he can beat Bama around half the time and make a title run every 3-4 years that’s doing really damn good.

How can a team that’s played for 4 national Championships in 16 years, winning 3 of them, with 3 different coaches be considered anything even remotely close to a “1 hit wonder”?

We’ve done 3 different ways too:

Elite Defense in 2003
Balanced Team in 2007
Best offense eva seen in 2019

Haters like to point to Cheesedick and Scam at Auburn.

Auburn might have fallen off a cliff in 2011-12, but they were right back in the title game in 2013. And that's the absolute worst case scenario.

Since 2000
Three NCs
Five SEC titles
Not the best, but no one else but Bama has more NCs and no other SEC school has more SEC titles except Bama.

We aren’t one hit wonders. Not this century.

All of the naysayers calling us a one hit wonder are just chewing sour grapes. LSU isn’t going anywhere.

You do realize eight of those guys committed under Miles right?

I wouldn’t exactly call that being “hand picked by Coach O”

Coach O has a lot more humility and willingness to fix problems than the Chiz had. It’s his greatest strength as a person and a coach.

I don't know about one-hit wonders, but there will be a huge falloff from this past year, and you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. At LSU, we don't rebuild, we reload, but this is as close to a rebuilding year as you'll find.

Logan and Shelvin coming back was huge for this team and Marshall and Chase should eat again. Getting the No.1 TE in the country to replace Moss (presumably) was also a huge get. If Vincent can step his game up and transition into a true cover corner and the line gets enough pressure to make up for a less-than-stellar LB group, we'll be in contention.

We'll get a good gauge of this team with how we perform against Texas led by Ehlinger as a Sr. in DV. Our schedule is largely manageable, but that November stretch is going to be a bitch. I actually think that Florida and Auburn give us more trouble than Alabama with Trask and Nix getting another year under their belts, but Alabama also takes a huge step back this year IMO.

Another 10-2-type season

Also if GOAT Saban wasn’t HC at Bama, LSU likely wins the SEC and Natty in 2011, 2012 and 2013. No telling what that would have done for future of LSU from 2014-2019.

Particularly when you consider that other teams that won or at least made it to the NC or CFP are on our schedule every year

Since 2000, CFP appearances or BCS game appearances:

UF - 2
AU - 2 (and had an undefeated season in 2004 where they were the odd team out)
BAMA - 8

All 3 are on the schedule every year so to win 3 titles during that span of time is pretty impressive considering we have to go through those guys

Les Miles was the HC. But don’t forget Orgeron had a hand in most of the guys coming to LSU being the recruiting coordinator.

We're no one-hit wonder. 20 consecutive years with 8 wins are more. As O said, we're "a player driven program". He's recruiting at a high level which will sustain us through attrition. The offensive philosophy has shifted and there's no turning back. He's addressed roster deficiencies on the LOS and we always have skill position players. Just have to keep finding decent quarterbacks. Other programs find them and so can we.

There wil be a modest step back next year as you would expect with losing the most productive QB in college football history. We'll weather it fine.
