The defense is starting to look very good

The DL is obviously imposing. I really hope that Anthony isn't too hurt. Even early on against UCLA the DL was doing very well containing their run, setting the edge, etc., but they made some adjustments and we got tired. Obviously they looked dominant against a 1AA school, but it was nice to see them really handle CMU last night.
We, obviously, had a major blown coverage but only one really bad one. That's an improvement (and is to be expected running a lot more zone, which we historically suck at. Even Aranda had growing pains with that). We didn't look lost to simple concepts like against UCLA, which bodes well moving forward (if only our safeties can get dialed in).
Energy level looked really good. DBs and LBs were flying around to close down angles. Made lots of stops behind the LOS. This became a major issue against UCLA b/c once the adjustments were made and they got some chunk plays, we lost energy and that led to tackling issues and indecisiveness, etc. It really killed us (in addition to the stamina issues, which were due to offensive failures).
Tackling was lights out last night. This combines with the energy part to really give hope moving forward. If our DL can play well and we play with energy and tackling on the back end, we can run with anyone. Just need the offense to help out (but that's a much bigger concern and there are still tons of questions there when thinking about real competition).

Yes the defense played great but Orgeron hinted that it doesn’t look good for Anthony. We need Ali Gaye back ASAP.

That would really suck.
Smith is going to have to learn how to be an edge. These injuries may lead to developing him into a potential GOAT-level DL by the time he leaves.

Hopefully the DL can keep getting pressure against the SEC schedule. Sure hope Anthony is ok, and they get Gaye back next week. If they iron out the coverage issues and keep getting better at gap and eye discipline, they can be damn good.

That 1st half of defense last night was the best half we have played since since 2019.

I agree with this. My biggest takeaway was the energy. It actually looked like the team was excited about playing football. Get this team some confidence and we could surprise,

I thought both TDs were really bad blown coverages, though I guess Burns on the long one was worse.

I did notice Jarrell Cherry do well in the limited time I watched him. On back to back plays he set the edge and kept his body free to make a tfl and a sack. It was textbook

HOW in da fuq does Major Burns not see a wide open receiver streakin down the sidelines last night? I literally just shook my head watching the replays last night

There is a chance I did not see the 2nd TD b/c I was watching Auburn-PSU by that point

The busted coverages are ridiculous. What the hell was Burns looking at..

Couple observations:
- good to see McGlothern back
- also good to see Jarrell Cherry, I think he was hurt too. 4-3 DE is probably the best spot for him
- Maason at DE gave some Marquise Hill/ Tyson Jackson vibes
- excited for Cam Lewis to get a start/ snaps. He diagnosed a screen that we blew up, and generally seemed to know where to be/ where to line people up
- it’d be nice to get the DBs somewhere near full health. I wanna see more of Jay Ward at safety and what Sage can do.
- our LBs besides Clark are smallish, hope that doesn’t bite us down the road. Yeah I know Micah and Bug play bigger, but still

He went deep middle. Sting took underneath he should have known he had deep 1/3, instead both safeties covered the middle and voila TD.

2nd TD was wide open, looked like someone blew coverage on a wheel route to the TE.

As improved as we look, I still see too much separation between our defenders and receivers (not the busted coverages). There were plays to be made last night that were negated by our defensive line’s pressure on the QB. SEC offensive lines will not be that soft. Our coverages need to tighten up bc SEC QBs will pick us apart.

We're running a ton of zone so that's going to happen. That's why energy and tackling are so important. If we keep stuff in front of us and tackle ball carriers, we'll be fine in the end. That's all you can do against modern offenses (somebody needs to explain this to O).
Also, what's important is our offense not looking bad and we're still waiting on that to happen.

Level of competition matters and I think it showed in this game. LSU just way more talented than CMU and lots of other factors.
This game could be a positive foreboding of things to come or could be a mirage. We just won’t know, likely until the Auburn and UF games if even by then.

i fricking love smith and the rest. style of play isn't especially similar but it reminds me of those early 2010 LSU Dlines with mingo and sonic sam.
