DiNardo's last 2 years were HORRIBLE. 2-9 in 1999? Probably the worst year in LSU football history.

We weren't 2-9. We were 2-8 before he was fired and then we beat Arkansas to end up 3-8.

2-9 would be the '92 season, the actual worst in LSU history.

Started with Arnsbarger. He didn't like to recruit much but did ok considering he was left a ton of talent. Mike Archer was over his head and his recruiting was very shallow at best. Curley Hallman while a good recruiter was dumb as rocks. Gerry Dinardo took over a talented team and recruited well but made horrible staffing decisions that eventually cost him his job. It was a dismal 10-12 years from 1989-2000

Mike gets to much blame for a coach that loved his team and family and was trying to help. The power that be at the time get to little blame, but there is enough blame to go that all should step back and thank God we are not in those times today.

If the Mike you are referring to here is Archer, you are absolutely wrong. I was working in the athletic program at the time, and he was an absolute joke. They hired a Frat boy to coach the team. There was zero discipline, the players laughed at him. Honestly, you have no idea what you are talking about. Mike Archer took a fine roster and turned it into a gang of thugs. I watched it happen.

I recall the dark ages being the 90s with Hallman and DiNardo!

DiNardo had some of the most talented tiger teams and simply could not coach them up.

The Crazy bout Curley days should have been named Curley bout Crazy ......... Sad times in Death valley. To show you his coaching prowess he couldn't keep a job as a HS coach in AL last I saw. How can a "SEC" coach not coach HS FB ..

My take on this subject.
During Charlie Mac's reign at LSU, fans were restless about LSU not beating Alabama. It was the proverbial 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Mac was winning, not enough of the games that mattered to the fans.
LSU hired an up and coming coach, Bo Rein, who tragically died in a plane crash before ever coaching a game at LSU. However, he did have his staff in place. LSU hired one of its own with the stipulation that the new coach keep Rein's staff.
That coach was Jerry Stoval.
He finished his career at 22-21-1 with a win at Tulane to push him over .500 winning percentage.
Three years with probably the most professional coach in Bill Arnsparger. His win-loss of 26-8 was very respectable. 1986 finished as SEC champions for the first time since 1970.
However he left to become athletic director at Florida.
Once again LSU was on a coaching carousel.
LSU hired the defensive coordinator Mike Archer. He became the youngest Head coach of a major program in the U.S. at the time. Problem was he couldn't recruit or evaluate talent very well.
Back to back losing seasons in his four year reign finished him.
Once again LSU was on that ever spinning coaching carousel.

LSU hired what they thought was a hot shot coach in Curley Hallman. He had impressive victories at Southern Mississippi over Alabama, Auburn and Florida State. However, his QB was a guy named Brett Farve.
This was probably the worst hire.
16 wins 28 losses was his resume. LSU touted 'crazy about Curly'. Couldn't wait to see him exit early.
Dinardo in 1995 brought back the magic, our normal white jerseys to wear at home and talent. However, his hard headedness did him in.
Twenty years of up and down was enough for all concerned. So LSU made a big time hire in Nick Saban and the rest as they say is history.

A couple of comments here -

Cholly Mac a good coach and yea...he couldn't beat Bear but the big knock on him was he had little turnover on his staff. Bear turned his staff over a lot because he was into developing future head coaches. Cholly Mac came to LSU from Bear's staff at KY because Bear wouldn't give something like a $100/mo raise. Coach Mac's staff was pretty much in tact the whole time he was here and only a few continued coaching.
LSU really had no choice but hire Stovall after Bo Rein died. It was late Jan, early Feb. and the staff was in place no one was really available. Jerry had a great year in '82 but that was it. The team was "ofor" in SEC play the next year.
Finally. LSU can really take the credit/blame for esclalating coach's salaries with the Saban hire. As I recall, Saban wasn't initially interested in coming to LSU until he heard how much we were willing to pay.

Ehhhhh. It turned out to be a great hire but many folks didn't even know who he was. All some people knew was Dinardo beat him in the Independence Bowl. He was up and coming at Mich St but we did take somewhat of a shot. He wasn't nearly the "big time" hire that he would be for a program now.

LSU did make Nick Saban the third highest paid coach in the country when he was hired and put a stipulation in his contract to make him the highest paid coach in the country by one dollar if he won a national championship.

Sandperson the teams before where Saints, trust me Mac had his fair share of thugs. The fights in the 60's and 70's are legendary. But the history of players with hot tempers and short fusses doesn't start even then, we had a nice number of them even in 30's-50's.

Our roster is not fine by any means, once you look at the depth chart in 1986 then 87 you will see the DL and secondary are super thin, lb is ok. WR, RB, QB and mainly the OL is were LSU depth is when Bill leaves.

In 1988 if not for Harmon and mainly Young coming in from SMU we do not share the SEC title and lose far more games.

Everything changed when the legislature passed the bill that allowed for the TAF to pay University bills and take on debt for public owned facilities

The rest is just details and names, without the money there is no current golden age of LSU Football

a lot of the reasons lsu is a top program today is the very same things people bitch about.....
it cost money to stay on top....

taf fees

the raise in ticket prices (I pay 4 times the amount of $$$ than I did in 1999 for tix...

advertisements all over the stadium and score board...

more sweets

pay parking

high cost for coaches salaries

yes the stadium was loud and filled with crazy fans that cant afford to go to the games or rather watch on tv but in todays game if it weren't for those changes we would a 4-8 football team every year.....
